Irregular Tire Wear That I've Never Seen Before...Help Please

On the inner side there are all these bumps. I checked my bearing and that's fine, I checked my bushing they seem it's time to change them but not too horrible...I recently got alignment so alignment shouldn't be a problem. That one tire pressure was low so I understand the side tire wear but bumps like that?

I think the tire wasn't balanced correctly. Can this happen because of an incorrect tire balance?

Thanks

P.S. I use to hear this humming noise ever since I got the tires installed. I thought they were noisy tires. Then when I saw this I thought it was bearing but bearing is fine. Inspected it and since I put stocks no noise. Can the humming noise happen because of incorrect tire balance?

It is hard to see in the pics , looks like a shock or balance issue

I have never seen anything in my life like this. Possibly defective tires because that is EXTREMELY irregular wear.

I am no expert but I had the same problem, and was told it was due to cupping caused by bad shocks or bad tires. It's time to put those renntech's in Karo.

I have never seen something like this eighter.

I made background black so you can see it more clearer.

The inner side is bumpy.

Thanks I heard that as well. But before changing shocks I was wondering if the tire wasn't balanced correctly..would cause something like this?

This is what I read.

Cupping
Cups or scalloped dips appearing around the edge of the tread on one side or the other, almost always indicate worn (sometimes bent) suspension parts. Adjustment of wheel alignment alone will seldom cure the problem. Any worn component that connects the wheel to the car (ball joint, wheel bearing, shock absorber, springs, bushings, etc.) can cause this condition. Worn components should be replaced with new ones. The worn tire should be balanced and possibly moved to a different location on the car. Occasionally, wheels that are out of balance will wear like this, but wheel imbalance usually shows up as bald spots between the outside edges and center of the tread.
So can this be a bad wheel balance?

I was in the exact same boat that your in now. I had one rear tire that looked just like yours, and had my renntech shocks collecting dust. Ever since i installed my shocks and my new tires, I havent had any cupping issues.

The rears are fairly easy to do. You wont need a spring compressor or anything, just an extra hydraulic jack to slowly relieve the spring pressure.

Thanks, I guess it's time to get the renntechs on. I guess I'll get the bushing as well. only 56k miles though...I guess the bigger wheels and horrible LA street contribute to it.

Thanks again

The weird thing is when I first put them I heard a humming noise. I thought the tires were cheap tires. But now I'm guessing maybe balance was off? The thing is I wanted to do everything together. Now unfortunately I don't have the finance to do the whole suspension with busing and buying rear camber arms. I'm trying to get a quick fix then once I get my finances straight tackle everything.

Most important one right now is the control arm.

Absolutely no disrespect intended but going on the photos the tyres look absolutely worn out.

With new tyres fitted which suit the dynamics of the car, a balance, alignment & suspension bush/ shocker check should sort out your troubles.

Good luck.

Thanks, I recently got an allignment. I just checked the shocks and they were fine. Bushings seemed fine not perfect, so the only culprit is the bushing or tire balance.

The tire has a lot of thread left. Hate to see it go to waste but ohh well. I'm just going to go ahead and change the bushings as well.

See the grooves on the left side. It's all the way bumpy.

well glad you found the culprit Karo... off balanced tires can cause irregular wear and car vibration. Get those wheels rebalanced and rotate them if you haven't in a while.

Karo - we have seen a number of W204's do this. Get everything correct & make sure your rear toe in is set correctly. These cars must run toe in on the rears.

EDIT - Here: https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...-toe-w203.html

Thanks guys, I'm just going to go ahead and change the bushing as well. From what I heard these bushing go out quick. Glyn, this was the front tire. I still believe little bit of it was due to a bushing.

Big wheels, no other changes. So what's so wrong. It's like all in life, the little things pile up. MB engineers drive a hard bargain and if it were so easy to tune a car, why is so expensive and competitive to make or finesse an F1? Well, Geometry controls all the ratios observed between linkages, suspension, drive action, stability, balance... and we all have seen how many pieces are needed to be set out of balance to pull down a thousand pieces domino. So if not ready to pay the piper, do not modify the factory built design.

There is no other course of action at a budget.

The tire is cupped. That is caused by not being able to rotate tires and by alignment issues, not all tires will do that but the cheaper the tire the more likely that is to happen. Chances are the tire was already gone by the time you got your alignment done. Buy some Michelins next time.

Thanks, your dead on my friend. I put 4 brand new cheap tires. I had the rears go out (inner side was down to the metal). So I changed the rears and had an alignment done. Which like you said it was most likely too late. I have seen couple of weights that have been missing (sticker residue but no weight). I've had these tires for roughly 1 year. I wanna say I easily put 20k miles on the fronts.

2 down 2 more to go. Wheels will be done Tuesday for sure but I'm still stuck on the caliper and lug nut color.

I'm probably going to go with Orange as suggested.

I was playing Street Fighter 4 and made me want to do orange/blue combo.
