I'm looking at replacing mine soon but i have issues. I need A/S for the snow but:

1. The Michelin pilot Sport A/S doesn't make a tire with the correct load rating for my wheel. I need a 91Y i think that will suport 1326 lbs or something like that. They make an A/S for the back but not the front. For the front they have it only in a 90Y but that is not "strong" enough of a tire- according to Michelin.

2. The Pirelli P Zero Nero M&S make their front tires in front tires in Turkey and their rear in Germany. Whats up with that?? Turkey is a great country but i dont want my tires coming from there.

Still looking for the perfect replacement for my tires but in a A/S version, so if anyone has a good suggestion with the same speed/load rating as the OEM version, please let me know. Thanks.

Different brand of tires

I need to replace front tires. I am thinking about using different brand of tires for the replacement. What do you think? Is it OK to to do this (same size just different brand).

That's should be ok. Some tires have rounded sidewall and some square.

That is why maybe a sticky on this subject might be nice. Tires are a mod that everyone has to do at sometime and an easy to find thread where people can post there experiences might be nice. Any chance Mr. Bob?

I wouldn't mix tires as their attributes are different and may cause it to handle unpredictably under varying conditions. For example, the car is set to understeer but tires in the front with too much grip relative to rear may cause oversteer. Probably not extremely dangerous as the stability control will fix most skids. It's tough buying just 2 tires as many times the formulations and tire models changed in the years between the old set and the new. Personally I hated the tires on my 2002 coupe and was happy to change all 4.

This might be veering the thread in a different way, but what do you all think of the Nitto NT555 Extreme Performance tires? I just procured a set with the wheel/tire combo I ordered.

I think they grip good in the corners, but on take off they just spin. My 16" Michelin all seasons I use in winter grip better on launch. The tire itself looks good...just wears like its made of pencil eraser material

I agree, I've also spin the tires for a second or two doing a 3500RPM launch, before ESP kick in.

However, I have to say Pilot Sports are great for cursing high speeds, I can confidently say I can cruse no worry at 125MPH no problem on these tires. They are so stable at high speeds. Pretty good in the wet too, but I want to try other tires that may just be as good for less dollar.

Perhaps I just want to compare the different tires on the market.

Staying at the High Performance Summer Tire level of course. I don't need All-season tires, since I already have another set of wheels/tires for Winter. (Blizzak LM-22s, Love them too!)

i got these after around 17,000 miles or so (rear tires were BALD!) i'm very happy with them and i think one of the first things you'll notice is the much softer ride compared to the pilotsports. another thing you'll notice, if you're picky enough, is the tread on the passenger side runs opposite that on the driver's side.

P Zero tire blow out on I95

Traveling down to Jupiter on wonderful I95 (a fairly regular business trip for me) early on Wednesday morning my passenger side rear tire blew out while I was doing about 80mph. On the positive side the car was very easy to control and get over to the nearside margin. A second positive was the quick response of roadside assistance; it was pouring with rain (the weather has really sucked this week here in sunny Florida after months of really nice weather) and I really didn’t fancy getting soaking wet so I called roadside assistance from my mobile(I don’t have tele-aid as an option). Within 45 minutes someone had arrived and replaced the tire with my spare which I thought was pretty good.
Now for the bad. Quite a few of the new C230s are coming with the P Zero Rosso tire, which based upon my driving up to now are pretty nice tires, comfortable ride and good road holding, however not many dealers have them and in fact non in the West Palm Beach area, and the closest tire I could find was back on Orlando! This meant I had to drive back to Orlando on the temporary which meant a long and boring trip being limited to about 60mph. The second bad thing is the cost of the tires, $270 + all the other BS charges brought it up to $320 to replace at my dealership, less $30 for being a good customer (pah!) resulted in a $290 cost to replace. Hopefully this will not happen too many times!!
Lastly after talking to the service people they found a nail in the tire near the sidewall and so I could not claim it as a warranty item. They did mention that they thought that the P Zeros may be more prone to damage than other low performance tires because they have a softer sidewall in order to give a more comfortable ride, so I had better want those curbs jumping out as they do sometimes and the other debris on the road which just seams to leap into your path no matter how much you try to avoid it.

oh *****! i'm glad you didn't lose control, especially in the rain!! and i'm also glad that my car has the Conti's. Aren't Perelli's supposed to be great? I thought they come on Ferrari's or Lambo's stock...

Tire Replacement Question

Got a nail in the sidewall of my drivers side rear tire today, obviously I cannont have it plugged and need to replace it.

The tires that came on my '05 are Michelin Pilot Sports, but I just can justify paying ~$200 per tire, so I'm looking at a cheaper, but similar tread design replacement.

My car has approx. 11K on it, are there any drawbacks to replacing one rear tire and not the other with a different tire? I know that having unmatching tires is not the greatest idea (nor does it look great), but are there any adverse affects that would affect vehicle handling, etc? Would it make the most sense to replace both of the rear tires?

If so...anyone interested in a passenger side 245/40/17 Michelin Pilot Sport with 11K on it in great condition?

Thanks for any responses.

See Garage
Isn't the spare a full size Pilot too? (My '01 C320 came with a full size spare, only on the steel wheel.) You could mount the spare in place of the ruined one. It's not doing anything back there in the trunk, anyway.

I wish the spare was a full size Pilot!

Thanks for the thoughts guys..I'm just going go ahead and place both rear tires.

Anyone interested in a Michelin Pilot Sport with 11K on it?

If I am getting OEM tires (Michelin). Are there places that would sell them cheaper than tirerack.com?

I'd try Costco. This month from June 6-June 26 they have a coupon out for $60.00 off any purchase of 4 tires made by Michelin or Bridgestone.

I can mail you the coupon if you'd like. I'm not using it. I got mine from Tire Rack.com
