Best tires for high mileage???
My C230K is going through tires too fast.
My original Michelins lasted 10,000 miles, and my current Khumo's wont get 13,000 miles.
So do you have first-hand experience with tires that can give much better mileage? Don't care about performance, I want mileage. Don't care about the Z rating either.
So whatta ya know????

I got the Bridgestone RE750's on my coupe and I like them. They're one of the highest rated for threadware for a performance tire. They also come in all-season. Don't know about Canada but in the U.S. tires are rated for wear, it's a number molded on the side of the tire and the number is relative. For example, a tire with a threadwear rating of 400 should last twice as long as one rate 200.

Tread life?
I put 62K miles on the original Conti CH95's before changing them. I think driving style and terrain affect tread life the most (given that they are properly inflated and rotated every 5K miles).

currently I'm running the Yokohama ES100. The rating is 280 and I think it's a lot better then the RE750.
btw, how do you guys drive your cars? My original PilotSport lasted 21k miles before I had to get it replaced. Of course that's till the rear are completely bold.

Had Pilot Sports on a C32 (driven very hard) and the fronts were gone in 9k miles.
P.S. Treadwear ratings are not comparable between tire brands. They are only used to show treadwear between tires for each manufacturer. So tread wear between a Michelin and a Toyo are useless but the ratings do mean something when looking at Pilot Sports and pilot Sport AS's.

I have Nitto extreme 555's.
They definitely outlast any other 19" tire I've seen.
Got about 20k on them and I easily have half of the tread left.
They have a harder compound on them.
Check tread life on www.discounttiredirect.com
Make sure your tires are balanced and aligned when needed. That keeps your tire wear down too.

I have put on 25,000 miles on my Toyo T1-S and they still have 30% treads left. It is the most durable high performance tire I've ever driven. Sorry, I can only give you testimonials on high performance tires as I have not driven any ordinary tires.

Honestly any tire with a ZR or higher speed rating will wear out very quickly. If you want something a little harder I would look for a VR or HR rated tire. These tires will have much less grip but if your driving style is not very agressive you should be just fine. Good luck. ZR tires will get you a max of say 25k per set with minimal hard cornering and acceleration.

you are very wrong about the tire ratings. all tires from all manufacturers undrgo the same testing. all there numbers are comparable.

**TIRE GURUS*** Please help me chose tires
For my GF's car. She needs new tires for her C230K. These are the choices I found that would fit her car (225/45/17) and affordable. Performance isn't that much of an issue, i just want to know what brand tire would be good for day-to-day driving, safe, and reliable.

Yokohama ES100 first choice. If you are looking best performance tire for the buck, Fuzion ZRi. Best overall taking cost and treadwear into account, go with the Kumho KH11 but it's a touring tire, not a performance tire.

i say continental or the bfgoodrich. I have the continental contiextreme contacts on my car and they are way better than my stock michelins. The dry dry and wet grip is really good and the noise is minimal for now (i've only had them on for 3 thousand miles. if you want a good tire thats not to pricey, i've had dunlops and coopers that were not that expensive and had pretty decent performance. I have never heard anything about those kuhmo tires, i dont know anything about them. If you want a good place to look at tire specs go to tirerack.com They got tons of tire evaluations and it will be very helpful in choosing the tire that will fit your needs.

2002 C 230 K cupped LR tire
On my recent trans-Canada trip in the C 230 K, towards the end a howling noise was developing on the left which I thought might have been a wheel bearing. I checked the play regularly and it was fine.
I discovered the origin of the noise tonight. Actually, it's a severely cupped LR tire. The majority of the tire is worn normally but the inside edge is massively cupped, in one point now it's down to the belts! Holy smokes dude!
Hmmm.
The car's never been in an accident where the rear was involved. It did have a minor hit on the LF wheel at one point earlier this year (other driver's fault) but wheel alignment was supposedly verified at the time of that repair.
It has 60,000 km and the MXV4 tires (16 inch HR) have about 4 mm of tread on them, except for the cupped tire's inside edge.
Usually cupping is caused by some play in the suspension, allowing the tire to oscillate somewhat. Considering it's the inside edge, it also might be toed out quite a bit. Camber looks normal to my eye.
Before the dealer investigates this wednesday, any thoughts?
TIA

I experienced this problem with a set of factory installed Michelin's on a Toyota Supra I used to own (at around 7k miles!)...Toyota refused the warranty and I had to go through the manufacturer to get it 'replaced'...

Thanks
I'm leaning towards the grenaded steel belt theory at the moment (because a wonky suspension is incomprehensible to me). The car will go to the dealer on the 8th and we'll see. The tires had been rorated by the dealer, though the last 20,000 km or so this tire was on the LR (as I wrote, I jsut got back from a LONG trip in this car).
Thanks for the reply.

Follow-up:
The diagnosis was a largely out-of-adjustment LR suspension. The car was taken to an alignment shop where two new camber bolts / pins part no. 000-330-00-18 were needed.
So the Michelin tire was not the culprit, but rather the victim of a wonky M-B suspension
The car - as I wrote - had bever been hit there or curbed so this must have been a factory defect. Perhaps a bolt worked loose - I'm speculating here because I wasn't able to talk to either the shop that did the work or the service advisor at M-B.
Interestingly, the car did not drive unusually poorly though the tires did squeal quite a bit when turning right (not left) at moderate speeds. That should have been a clue.
With the 2 pins, the adjustment and a new Michelin MXV4, we're back on the road again, in a safer condition....and somewhat poorer
