W203 Automatic transmission information

Hello,

Can I get help from everyone? What's the difference between an automatic transmission for (4MATIC) & the automatic transmission (Standard)? Need some explanations.

The 4Matic is an automatic transmission with all wheel drive in the C240 sedan.
The automatic two wheel drive sedan is the C230.

Honestly I thought the C240 was the AWD version of a C230 but it seems they did make a C240 2WD. I know all of the C240's I have seen are AWD.

I am not sure of the tranny is the same since I have not looked at the configuration under there. I assume it is the same tranny with an AWD drive gear attachment to the tranny tail shaft housing, but I could be wrong.

There will be a cost difference on a 4Matic since there are extra items to deal with like the propeller shaft, etc. My tranny was rebuilt last year at an indie shop for $3000. My Cadillac Escalade just had a tranny repair, not rebuild and it was about $3000 also. Transmission work is expensive for sure.

All 4Matics use the 722.6 5 speed auto tranny whereas newer RWD W203's use the 722.9 7 speed transmission.
