Look online at the MB EPC under the category EXHAUST or on the MB Maintenance DVD Manual

How many catalytic converters are there? That is my main question.

I believe there is just the one integrated with the exhaust manifold. The other device is the resonator if I am correct.

Hey Glyn,

are there differences between the sedan and coupe for the exhaust diagram?

If so, can you post the coupe m271 diagram?

Much obliged!

Quick question... is the thing after the Headers/Cat combo a secondary CAT? or is it a resonator?

I have a clog somewhere downstream from my Headers, and replaced my CAT adjacent to headers with no luck... so I'm thinking it may be in the second segment, but I'm not sure what it is. If it is a resonator, then I'll just remove it and go straight pipe, but if it is a secondary CAT then i'll replace with OEM.

??

Just ONE on a C230 2002.
2 on M271. One is attached to the manifold.
C350 is different story.

Hey c230 sportscoupe & Glyn,

I made an account on EPC (thanks for the suggestion).

Entered in the VIN for my 2003 c230 coupe, and a different exhaust diagram came up. (see attached).

Is this one correct? or does EPC have an error?

There seems to be an extra element (circled in blue) on the lower exhaust (resonator?). Can you confirm:

Blue circled = resonator ?
Red circled = 2nd CAT ?

Just as FYI. 2002 coupe had a separate cat, not integrated in to manifold.
2003 and up was integrated.

Thanks... I'm just confused because the diagram glyn posted for the m271 (2003-2005) looks different than the one that came up for my car (via EPCnet after entering my VIN)

The manifold/cat integration isn't down in the picture i posted (glyn posted it separately - post 7). I'm only curious about the exhaust piece AFTER this because there are two in question, and both look like they have a CAT, but one also an additional piece that looks like a resonator. Which one is m271 (coupe/sedan/other)?

I'm just trying to figure out which one is the m271 and which is m111 (or other).

Midnight. All diagrams here are M271. You had better climb under your car to establish which set up you have. Blue box is definitely a resonator. I thought the previous box was also a resonator but maybe it is a secondary polishing Cat. I have personally never been involved with I4 exhausts. Only V6 exhausts.

Is this one correct? or does EPC have an error?

There seems to be an extra element (circled in blue) on the lower exhaust (resonator?). Can you confirm:

Blue circled = resonator ?
Red circled = 2nd CAT ?

Of all the M271 engines that I've worked one, none that I've encountered had an exhaust system looking like the picture posted. The manifold is one piece unit with the cat (VERY expensive) and the junction between that and the exhaust pipe is not even shown here. I think there is an labeling error for this diagram. Perhaps this is for the M111 or a diesel motor?

Note that Midnight's diagram is either or. The second unit shown might be for areas with more strict emissions. The diagram I pulled was USA.

One cat on downpipe, one cat after that, a resonator and the muffler (Euro 4 M271)

My diagram was pulled directly from EPC using my car's VIN (US-based).

I went to the dealership yesterday to pick up my car and after talking to the service manager, then brought me under the lift and showed me that the diagram I posted matches my car (with the exception of my mods).

Basically.. I wanted to confirm because there is a clog somewhere after my primary headers/cat, and wasn't sure what else lied between this and my muffler since there were two m271 exhaust diagrams floating around.

One interesting point i noticed at the dealership: there are only O2 sensors pre and post the primary cat, so the second one must be a "secondary polshing CAT" like glyn suggested. Fortunately, there are no sensors pre/post the secondary CAT, so I'm going to just replace everything downstream of my primary CAT with straight pipe for a cheap fix (~$150) that should avoid any CEL's. Because replacing that secondary CAT would involve purchasing a exhaust section with a lot of unnecessary tubing (I was quoted $1015! from the dealer).

Thanks everyone for all the input. I just never new that there were two different OEM exaust set-ups for the m271.

OK - interesting. So your car is set up like my M112 C240 was 2 primary Cats & 2 secondary cats. It's obvious that not all cars are like this however.
