Will Dealer change oil at 10,000 miles if...

your FSS says it will be due at 11,500 miles, instead? I don't mind (generally) adhering to MB's FSS routine, but I don't want to go beyond 10,000 miles before requesting "Service A" attention under the free maintenance system.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this.

MB-BOB, it looks like we both have oil on our minds today (see my poll). Interesting point though. Good question.

They said within 1000 miles they would do it. Can u believe i cant drive my car for 3 weeks. I had an accident and hurt my hand, required a bit more than 20 stiches... so I cant drive stick.

From what I've seen from various posts, dealers will not do an "out of FSS" service for free under warranty. With synthetic oil and lead free gas I believe FSS is more than conservative with its intervals. No, I don't want to start a "you can never change oil enough" and "follow FSS" religion/paranoia discussion. :-)

My wild guess is it really depends on yr dealer. If yr FSS is due on 11,500 and you're only 1,500 away. I think they can do it AS the 11,500 service. All they need to do is to reset the computer onto yr next service mileage afterwards. I doubt the computer can track whether you've physically changed the oil or not.

I cant see any reason why they wouldnt do it. Hope I'm right!

dealer told me 10k on them

the reason this came up was because I told them I may do it at least once, possibly twice before 10k. I did it at 1k and therefore the FSS although not reset, may not read necessary changing till 11.5k. Dealer understood this and told me with the service manager, that they would cover 10k regardless of what the computer said and would reset it at that time. There may be times that I will change my oil in between the service intervals given but that doesnt mean that Im not still entitled to what I was offered (once a year or every 10k). Good luck.

That's strange you bring this up MB-BOB. I just spoke to my dealer this morning. I have to go in for service (my engine light came on AGAIN) and I asked about them going ahead and doing the service even though it isn't due for one in about 2500 miles (and it has 10,500). They said that it wouldn't be a problem. Of course, I can't tell if it is a pity move since my engine light is on...

On my 2000 BMW z3 I had a series of lights that told me when the computer decided I should change synthetic oil. Due to my wifes highway driving the first change was required at 17000 miles. Forseeing this, I spent $50 to have the dealer change the oil at 5k and NOT reset the computer. I did this for my peace of mind, just a couple of years previously BMW had a different interval recomendation using regular oil. I would think that unless you change your air filter every 5k that the oil is going to get contaminated. Why take a chance at saving $50 to $100 a year versus wringing out 200k miles from an engine.

Oh Oh, you tried to trick the computer. Open the hood HAL! See the computer is smarter than you think. It new you put new oil in that Z3, it was watching you the whole time, it heard everyword you said. If I were you I would pay more attention to the computer before it stops letting you drive it.

I paid the dealer and had my oil changed at 5K. I told them not to reset my computer. As soon as I started driving, I noticed the FSS mileage started to change. The computer knew there was cleaner oil. Lol. I saw the FSS change before my eyes. Took it a few minutes. The more I went, the more it went up. So the FSS went up to 8000 after my oil change. Regardless I took my car in around 11,000 which was about 1500 short of the FSS and they did it.
