Problems killing me.
When i bought this car (2007 c230) I figured it was a quality product. People told me they go 200k miles no problem. Well at 80k i had the turbine speed sensor go that MB wont even sell to anyone which ended up costing $1050. Now at 94k miles i have a bad balance shaft to the tune of $1400+ in parts and thats through a buddy with connections. And then I get to pull the engine to fix it which means my frame-off project will get kicked out of the garage.
I cant find any useful info on replacing this thing on the web or in the TSB, specifically what specialty tools I will need. Id like to not have my project out in the weather for weeks.
I'm pretty easy on this car. So disappointing...
What else can I expect to go wrong? I'm seeing manifold issues on the early M272's too...

SSM ~ Arghh - Sorry you seem to have all the common problems in one car. Have you positively identified that you are reliably getting a P0016 & 17 together? Have you boroscoped the engine to take a look at the sprocket for wear?
It's a crap job because the engine has to come out so you can get to the back of it for the BS. You don't disturb the crank so I don't think it requires any special tools. If you disturb the crank there is a special tool required for the rear seal IIRC. Otherwise as long as you have a decent set of torx & a torque wrench & plenty of patience you should be OK. Most of the time on this job is taking out & replacing the engine.
The inlet manifold can be a pain but in SA we just make up the flap rods etc out of decent material & repair them.
There is nothing else that commonly fails on these cars & they will do huge mileage. You seem to have got an unlucky vehicle.
Good luck!

Glynn, thanks for your response. Yes i got 16 and 17 together, cleared the codes, and immediately got the pre-codes back when I started it. Good to know that I may be OK for a while after fixing this.

Where would i insert the boroscope? Here I was thinking the BS was on the front of the engine.
I have two different lists of parts to do this job. One has 8 parts on it, and the other is two pages long from my buddy. I cant find a record of anyone else fixing this themself and sharing along the way to make heads or tails of it.

SSM, sorry to hear about your luck. Sorry about my post yesterday, I read that at p0011 and p0012 when I suggested magnets. If there is any WIS documents I can get you, let me know. There was a guy a while back that did this repair, but I don't think he documented it. Found the post: https://mbworld.org/forums/5197637-post280.html Maybe Randy can give you some pointers.

To Boroscope you have to remove a cambox cover and go down the chain case.
