Does your M271 use any oil?
Curious, does your car use any oil between services & if so how much?
BTW mine never uses any. All open hwy driving 110kph, no stop start.

I've never measured how much oil I suck up but it doesn't appear that it uses any - or at least very little. It's got 89K miles on it and I do WAY more highway miles on it than stop and go.

All of you guys who are losing oil are getting me concerned! I'm not due for an oil change for a bit over 5000 miles but I may measure what I take out of the engine to see.
I have never gotten a low oil warning and I change the oil (always Mobil 1 0w40) on a slightly aggressive schedule of about every 10K miles.

I normally check the oil level in the morning after the car has been standing overnight, I use the display to get the exact oil level reading by:
1) turning the ignition key to position 1
2) make sure the odo km reading is displayed
3) press the Reset button quickly three times (should hear a beep)
4) turn the ignition to position 2 (should see the the Battery Voltage)
5) scroll to the next screens where you can see the exact oil level e.g. 4.9l
I know my car takes 5.5Litres so with the reading from above I can determine exactly how much I need to top-up. I know she uses +/- 500 ml every 5000 - 6000km and only check it every now and then...
The oil level sensor seems to be very accurate, as a test I took the reading before putting oil in and then again after putting oil in (did give the oil time to settle) and the difference was correct.

In theory it should use some oil as the piston walls would have a very thin coat every time it goes up and down and that gets burned of in the combustion process. If it did not then there would be metal on metal (rings against the cylinder and the engine would wear very fast)
There also seems to be lots of oil in harmonic silencer coming off the supercharger, I was told by many sources incl sr Techs at MB that this is normal with SC

Yes ~ in theory all cars use oil & SC M271's certainly suffer some oil carry over but it is minimal in the overall scheme of things. It takes very little oil to make a mess of the intake.
Using a little bit of oil is nothing to worry about. I suspect that a lot of cars here get driven quite hard.
Most of my friends with M271 cars do no top up at all between 15,000 Km services.
These cars use chamferred MOS2 coated rings running on an Alusil bore. The rings are actually hell to run in with modern oils which is why the run in oil the car comes with should not be changed early. They should not be babied excessively when new or they never bed in properly.
