Advice for Rear Brake Pads and Rotors

Hi there,

My mechanic said that I need to buy:
- Rear brake pads
- Rotors

I'm trying to keep costs down right now so I want to buy online and then have him install.

I found this site:
Rotors:
http://www.autopartsway.ca/partlist....S/positionRear

Pads:
http://www.autopartsway.ca/partlist....S/positionRear

The prices are all over the place. Any suggestions on the ones to buy on there? At all?

Thanks!

I bought some Akebono pads for the car. Haven't yet put them on, but the general review is that they feel the same just with less dust and less brake squeal. Even though the brakes aren't that bitey and grabby like a more sporty vehicle I like the more casual gradual nature of the stock brake setup.

I use http://www.partsgeek.com & have been happy. Get OEM rotors & pads.

Akebono pads and decent rotors (try not to get Chinese ones, but those would probably work OK).

Is it fine to use ceramic pads on the rear with OEM ones on the front?

Probably not, as it would throw off the braking balance. Mine is due for a brake change soon. I went with Zimmerman coated & drilled rotors all around w/ OEM fluid, pads & other misc parts. The only non-OEM thing I'm doing is Stoptech braided stainless steel lines to change out the rubber OEM ones.

i suggest Zimmermann rotors and EBC RedStuff pads. you can get the rotors in coated or not coated, and you can get other pads too like YellowStuff or GreenStuff.. i have a brand new set of rear Zimmerman coated rotors and front rotors that are not coated that i was goin to put on my 06 C280 but ended up getting a BBK instead. if you are interested i can do 120+shipping for all 4 rotors!

I use Akebono pads on the front and back. The OEM pads bite really well. The Akebono felt a little different but seemed to bite just as well as the OEM pads and as noted, there is no brake dust (big plus for me!). I haven't done any measurements, but it appears that the rotors last a lot longer with the Akebono pads. I got my pads at http://www.placeforbrakes.com/index.php, but somebody found a slightly cheaper place - I don't think there was much difference. http://www.rmeuropean.com/ is a good place for the rotors. They also carry Akebono pads and if you order more than $60, shipping is free (I am assuming that you are in the States). You may also consider looking at Amazon.

If you are interested in the EBC pads, you may want to check out this thread: https://mbworld.org/forums/c32-amg-c...red-stuff.html. I have no experience with them.

I don't know that putting ceramic pads on the rear with the OEM still on the fronts will make that much difference. It would probably be preferred to go to ceramic all around but as far as Akebonos are concerned, I don't think the bite/feel is that much different.

I assume "your mechanic" is not from the $tealer. They might want to advise you to change your rotors to pump up some business (they have quoted me outrageous prices to change spark plugs!). Rear brakes generally have the least wear. If you don't feel a ridge on the edge of the rotor they do not need to be changed. If they are worn, they should be measured to determine if they are ready for replacement - hopefully your mechanic did that and didn't just eye-ball it.

i have EBC RedStuff pads on all 3 of my benz's, front and rear, and i will never use anything else. i had Akebono's and my EBC RedStuff outlasted, outperformed, and are also a nice little aesthetic touch (the red looks good on my red c280, and match my red brakes on my C63 AMG perfect..i took the Akebono's off after about 3k miles and put on the EBC Redstuff and i have NEVER had a problem with them at all EVER. ive had the same EBC RedStuff pads (front and rear) with Zimmermann Cryo-Treated drilled rotors for 55k miles on my c280, and i have NEVER had a single issue. very very low brake dust, AMAZING bite, and wear life is fantastic. idk if some of you other guys have had problems with them, but i have them on all 3 of my Benz's as well as EBC red painted rotors and pads on my bike 2012 Triumph Daytona 675R SE ( The white/red/black with carbon fiber EVERYTHING with the slipper clutch, quick shifter, Ohlins TTX fully adjustable rear shock and NIX30 fully adjustable inverted forks.. not the white/blue POS =P ) and i love them. EBC Redstuff pads are amazing. people dont realize that they have a specific break in period pad coating, so yes for the first like two or three days its gonna feel a little weird if you arnt used to them. they do however heat up very fast, and once they heat up, they are incredible pads. even cold i have zero issues.. i have been running the same redstuff pads on stock rotors for my c300 since 32k miles, im now currently at 70k miles and even thru this HORRIBLE winter we have had in new jersey, ive not had a single issue with the heating up time and braking power. my girlfriend drove my white c300 while her 2012 c300 was in the shop, and her dad needed to take the car really quick and he asked me if i had upgraded brakes because my c300 with stock rotors and EBC RedStuff pads with 34-35k miles on them stop better COLD than her stock pads on stock rotors on the same model car with LESS THAN 9K MILES ON IT AND 2 YEARS NEWER!!! a week later he had them on his 2011 E550 and on my girlfriends car too! ill never go back to anything else. EBC products are incredible and i am a life long customer for sure. i fully stand behind their products 1000000000%

Just my .02 cents

Thanks Luke. That's good to know. I'm happy with my Akebonos but when it comes time to change them, I'll keep EBC in mind.
