Replacing oil filter, lot of oil in housing? What's up with that?

Replacing oil filter, lot of oil in housing? What's up with that?

Did an oil change recently and noticed the oil just seems to sit in the
oil filter housing and won't drain. I sucked out about 6 oz of oil to get to the bottom and inspect it.
Can't see anything obvious.

Anyone encounter this?
Something clogged? How to fix it? 35 is an idle valves & 26 is a bypass valves FYI

I noticed the same thing on my w203 and w211 every time I change/d the oil so I doubt it is an issue.

Mine has the same thing when I change my oil as well. I think it's oil from the filter that drains out when you loosen the filter.

My oil seems very sludgy and I did 2000 miles ahead of time.
Well I do have >223K miles...so can't ***** too much.

Sounds like you got water or coolant in your oil. Is there any smoke coming out the exhaust?

Well the head gasket has been leaking for a long time, mostly out the side of the head.
But didn't seem worth it to replace the gasket, local mechanic wants $2500 plus.
A replacement engine can be had for less.

Sounds like a coolant leak. Surprised you haven't blown the head gasket yet and killed the engine.

It would probably be a good thing to get the head gasket looked after. After all burning coolant is one thing but it will find it's way into the oil as well. I remember seeing a YouTube video by Scotty Kilmer talking about Steel Seal which you pour into the coolant and it supposedly seals small head gasket leaks. Whether it's a gimmick or the real deal I'm not sure. Not sure if I'd try that in a Benz either even though you're at such a high mileage. It's kind of like a badge of honor having 223k on a motor that's known to be a bit quirky.

Oh BTW when I change my oil I slightly open the oil filter cap about halfway then I jack up the car and drain it from underneath. At that point the oil filter housing is pretty dry. It's kind of like when you open the back of a jerry can, it allows for better drainage.
