Question Timing chain tensioner help, M271 engine

Hi everyone, I'm new to this and I have run into a problem. I need to renew the timing chain and cam sprockets on my 2007 C180K estate. As the car isn't worth a great deal, and my pet home mechanic doesn't love me anymore; armed with a Haines manual, the internet, and a friend with spanners I thought I'd tackle it myself! So far, although time consuming and fiddly for big fingers it has been fairly straightforward, we've got the cam cover, front cover and alternator off, and can see the cam sprockets ( with missing teeth) and slightly twisted looking chain and guides. The Haines manual says the chain tensioner is behind the alternator, and we have found something there, but it looks nothing at all like the tensioner I have to replace it! The new tensioner is brass with a hex head, and what was behind the alternator looked like a plastic cover about the right size, so we thought it would be behind that and set about removing it. It doesnt want to come off at all....so after much scraping, we have the majority of it gone.....to reveal a metal cap that may or may not have a hex or torx socket in it. Looking from above the guide on the left hand side has some give...so that's the tensioned one, and this metal thing appears to be in the right place....there is nothing else around it....how does it come out? We don't want to go breaking things...so any help is appreciated. I've attached a few shots from a mobile on a stick

That plastic plug, comes out just like a freeze plug.
You can Google how to remove a Freeze plug.

Take a pointed-punch, or a screw-driver, and bang it in the center. Make a hole in that plastic cap, then pry it out.
You should get another plastic cap. Or, put RTV over any hole that you made.

Fwiw, I've posted and attached a ton of info on the M271 and the timing chain.

Also, please add your country to your profile. For some people, getting even a cheap $10 item that I can buy in America from Amazon.com costs them $$$$$$$$ - that is if they can even get it.

Good Luck!

Red face

Thank you so much Nothing I found makes any mention of a cap, though we had guessed that was probably what it was, and just didn't want to go banging around without confirmation. It's England by the way, so a new cap was less than 8 dollars, and it's on its way to me now
