2005 Satellite Radio Question

Ok before those few normal people go tell me to search..I did a search already and the comments seem to be mixed.

Can you install an aftermarket sirius receiver on a new 2005 c230 sedan? With the new ashtray is it possible to get it in there still? Has anyone installed one anywhere that can post some pics. Thanks.

You can put in any aftermarket sat receiver, XM or Sirius. But unless you get the official MB one, you won't be able to control it from the radio and steering wheel controls. Sirius receivers are huge compared to XM and most won't even fit in the 2004 ashtray let alone the 2005 ashtray. I had XM in the ashtray for a long while and I didn't like it there. It's too difficult to see and use in there in day to day life while driving. I had it high up by the radio and while not as pretty, it was far more enjoyable to use. The best looking smallest unit you can buy is the Roady 2, the smallest Sirius unit is the XACT. Yes, it's not pretty but mucho cheaper than the factory unit and very portable from car to car to home to office. And now XM has the MyFi which is a portable walkman size unit.

Just a thought, but you maybe able to stick a slim remote controlled type unit like the XM Commander on the sun visor, have it out of the way and somewhat visible.

I was going to get the small kenwood or panasonic sirius unit because it is about the same size as the XM commander.

Those aren't that small, the faceplate would not even fit a 2004 ashtray but maybe the Maybach ashtray. There really isn't a good place to put them either because they are sooo large. Think about it, just the Panasonic display is 6" wide and 1.3" deep, that's huge for just a display and that doesn't even include the receiver that you have hide in your trunk. The Roady is 4" wide and .7" thick and it's the entire unit, no seperate box, the antena is ridiculously small and it's portable.

Installation

A good installer could conceivably fit the smallest Sirius receiver in your 2005 C Class ashtray. If you don't mind going with XM, I strongly suggest you get a ROADY as it is smaller and very capable unit.

However, in order to fit the receiver (XM or Sirius) in the ashtray compartment you probably will lose the cigarette lighter in the process in order to make room for the unit.

For connecting the receiver to the head unit, you are lucky your 2005 C Class comes in with a "standard" AUX INPUT that can be activated by pushing and holding the CDC button for 2-3 seconds on the head unit. However, you do need to purchase the OEM AUX IN cable from the MB dealer and have it installed. Do a search and you'll find out the part number and installation instructions.

Choose a good installer, and then show him all necessary instructions and pictures to give him an idea of what you want to achieve.

Of course, nothing beats the OEM MB sirius unit... (However, it will set you back around $1,000-$1,300, including installation. )

Good luck,
Martin-

Look into Panavise and ProFit, those are the largest 2 manufacturers of mounts.

Sirius has a free XACT for your Car or JVC KT-SR2000 when you pay $142 for a year's subscription and $9.99 shipping. Use code: 070 https://home.sirius.com/webDUWI/HomePage.aspx

If you got a 2005, why not just get the OEM tuner and be done with it?
