You can now control your IPOD from the steering wheel.

But as of know, we don't know if it will work on previous cars. As scorchie mentioned, it is controlled via CANBUS and not Fiber. IT may be retrofittable to previous models but time will tell. Please check scorchie's post in the tech section.

an alternative to a cd changer?
I've been thinking of adding a CD changer to my 2002 C230. Does anyone know if the Ipod mod can be retrofitted to the 2002 c230? I don't have an Ipod but for my car, I'd buy one and skip the changer.
It would be so nice to be abl to digitize my cds and listen to them. I'll only do this if I can do it so it's integrated through the steering whee commands. Nothing worse than a crash at 80MPH cuz you're switching songs via the ipod screen.

From my service rep:
I heard back from my MB rep. It is my understanding that the integration
kit will be rolling out for 2005 models by year-end. The link does not
mention that this system is not currently available. This was an oversight
and will be corrected shortly. The current information states that the kit
will debut in April with the 2006 M-class, and for most other models later
this year. Mercedes has not released any additional information as to when
it will be available.
It appears the kit will cost about $300 + installation. I'm not quite sure
what installation will entail. The iPod is not inculed in the kit. iPod
products are sold seperately through Apple's retail stores and Apple
Authorized Resellers. It should be compatible with the latest iPod firmware
including iPod, iPod Mini, and iPod Photo. The kit will allow you to store
your device in an interface in the glovebox. It will charges the iPod device
while using it, similar to the integrated telephone system. You will be
able to access it through the Multifunction steering wheel. I haven't seen
one in action yet, and I probably won't until they start rolling out. I'm
sorry I can't give you any more info at this time. I will let you know when
I hear more about it in the upcoming months.

dfw park place doesn't seem to know anything about it...
i went to the dealer this weekend and they do not appear to know anything about it. my guess is it'll come out late in the year. the dealer did however give me a free ipod aux cable so it was REALLY nice of him to do that. if anyone gets any details on the kit please post, i'm sure there will be many eagerly awaiting this...
