noisy idling sound from 2.3L Engine

Quick question, my C230 with a 2.3L SC motor, seems to make noise at idle. It makes a ticking sound kinda from idle (not from valves), it goes away when you touch the gas. It seems to me it is from the belts, can someone tell me if it is the belt or maybe a pulley or something?

Well I drove the 2.3 engine as a loaner once and it is a noisey car to start with. The ticking sound could very well be related to what you call the PURGE VALVE. When I owned a 2002 C240 I had the same ticking sound at idle as you did. If your car is under warrenty take it in and they would put a cover on the purge valve. The ticking noise should pretty much go about 90%. Easy solution.

I love my loud 2.3!! Very noisy when cold, you'll get used to it.

I dont think its from the purge valve, I get the noise even when it is warm. It sounds more like a whine/clickish sound

Get a stethoscope and put in on the SC housing while the car is running. BE MINDFUL of the belt.

If it sounds like metal grinding, that's not cool, try changing the SC oil. If it is just a clacking noise, go to zzperformance.com and buy the $40 Eaton SC nose coupler. It's made of harder plastic and makes less noise, and does not fatigue as easily as stock. The stock piece is said to start getting noisey around 40-50, and horrible 65+.

Interesting part. Will keep it on my bookmarks. If it wasn't so dificult to replace I will do it right know. But seeing the install, I will wait until the stock one fails.

Don't think it will ever really fail, you just get noise and slack. I wouldn't want it to fail though, how would you motor get air?

nukblazi: I have this sound but only in cold and with a gear (the first 3 min); could it be this be the coupler? or if it is the coupler I should also have the noise after 3 min?
