Winter tires

<<i live in Canada ,so need good 1 for heavy snow, Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60 is good ? or which 1 is better than ?& what Winter tire u using last year?>>

On my W202 C280 I used Blizzaks and they were OK. Since the W202 wheels would not fit the W203, I started over with new wheels and Nokian WRs which were also good, but not as good as their cost suggested. And since the W203 wheels cannot be used on the W204, I start over once again and this time it might be the Goodyear Ultra-Grip which has finished in first place in the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport's annual winter tire test. In the Alps on a W204, as it happens.

For what it's worth.

Try Nokian tires, they make some serious winter tires, I went with the WR tires which are all seasons on my last ML and they had some real good bite in snow/slush and even grip on ice, but lets face it, ice is ice, nothing is going to get you much traction. At the time they were the only tire with the severe service emblem, thats probably changed by now though.

This is a very good thread. I am going to buy a set of wheels and snow tires as well for this winter, really need your help since i have no experience of snow tires.
I have one question here, can I put the wheels and tires without the sensor for the Tire Pressure Monitoring System?
If I use the one from the original wheels, is it difficult to take them out?

Thank you for your help in advance.

Purchased a set of Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D for my wife's car last fall from Tirerack. They worked flawlessly. I had been using Pirelli's for a long while but found the Dunlops to be better. Lower road noise and good traction in snow are the positive attributes for the Dunlop.

We're in the GTA so the tires spent most of its time on cold-dry pavement, but our street doesn't get plowed much and we always could make it through. AWD certainly helps as well in that situation.

Note that the M3 is an older model then the 3D.

Also, you'll need to factor in customs and brokerage if you order from the U.S. (since Dunlops are not made in the US/Mexico -- you don't get the benefit of NAFTA). Last year when the CAD was 0.83 USD, I saved about $200 for the set.

I second Nokian Tires. I have Hakkas and they are the best (have had bridgestone and michelin snows in the past).

Yeah they are made in Finland and they do some serious winter testing with them. The set I had got me through blizzard conditions while the cars around me were spinning out lol.

Only downside is not many tire outlets carry them.

A link to the ADAC (similar to the AAA for Germany) performance winter tire test for this year. Click on the red i to see the table ranking the tires from best to worst.

I believe Nokian is owned by Bridgestone. Or at least they are a significant shareholder.

Not according to either website, Nokian's website doesn't say anything about that, but with the way tire companies are buying out the competition it wouldn't surprize me. They usually have to list the parent company somewhere though, and Nokian appears to be independent.

Found it under the Nokian "History" page. In 2003, Nokia ended it's ownership and Bridgestone become the largest shareholder.

And then in the Report by the Board of Directors 2006 , it was cited that Bridgestone held 16.1% of the total outstanding shares.

Not that there is anything wrong with Bridgestone... of course.

Cool, heck I looked on their site and couldn't find anything there, good find. Yeah Bridgestone is a pretty good tire, they got a bad wrap when Firestones started exploding off Explorers ha ha. Guess its good that Bridgestone just owns Nokian and doesn't make them. Seems like everyone owns everyone anymore..B.F. Goodwrich tires are own by Michellin now.

Can anyone confirm if 16" rims will fit over the upgraded brakes on the C350 Sport? I am on TireRack and they offer 16" packages for the C350. If I can go with a smaller rim, I most certainly would prefer that.

Leaving pressure sensors out?

<<I have one question here, can I put the wheels and tires without the sensor for the Tire Pressure Monitoring System? If I use the one from the original wheels, is it difficult to take them out?>>

The sensors are easily removed from the OE wheels once the nut is removed from the outside of the threaded valve stem.

If no sensors are present, the sensing receiver (trunk, left side) will be silent.

The unanswered questions are:

Can the MB sensors be installed in an aftermarket wheel, given that the MB wheels have a support boss cast inside?

If the sensors are not installed, how will the wheel be balanced, considering the counterbalancing weight of the AMG logo opposite the valve stem.

As for me, switching the sensors from my C300's stock wheels to the 18" AMGs was simple, but my idea to use the stockers for winter tires without buying another set of pricey sensors may not work because of balance problems.

All things being equal, a narrower tire is better in snow. Also, more sipes (slits or edges) are better in ice. Larger blocks are better in the dry. If you look at that WS-60, you'll see that it cheats by using a narrower tread for the width of the tire. This is wonderful in the snow, but terrible in the dry.

All this is fine in theory, but actually it turns out that the chemical makeup of the tread is actually more important than the pattern itself.

Bridgestone's Blizzaks seem to again have the best compound, but that compound is only for the first half of the tread depth. After that, the tire is supposed to be used as an "all-season" tire, however, when I tried this with the original WS-50, it sucked.

My wife has the Dunlop 3D on her Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX and they're a nice balance of barely livable in the dry, ok in the wet, and very good in the snow and ice. They have a real shoulder that she can corner on unlike the WS-60.

tirerack.com has experts answering their phones. Give them a call for free advice and great prices. (I have no affiliation with them, but my family has bought 8 sets of tires from them)

I'm going without winters .... I think ... never used them before, so going to see if the 300 4Matic and all seasons works out well.
Bad idea previous MB owners?

Dunlop Wintersport M3 changes the entire characteristic of my FWD Maxima for the better in snow. Went from factory Bridgestone Potenza Re92 tires (crappy snow handling) to awesome grip. Note 2 others have favored the Dunlop winter sport tires above. Great value. Great grip. HTH. Good luck!

I had Nokian Hakka-Qs on my Maxima when I still had the car. The grip was excellent.

I've got Dunlop Wintersport M3s on my current ride now, and am awaiting the snow. I tested it on dry pavement and they are wicked. SNOW... where are you???

If you were happy with your front-drive TSX on all-seasons, you'll be happier with your 4matic on all-seasons. Just be careful as it'll be much easier to accelerate than your TSX, but may offer similar or worse braking and handling due to the increased weight.

I was thinking of the same package as what you just bought.... I'm in T.O. as well, and have the C300 manual. I'm curious as to what your tire dealer said about using staggered winter tires, because I've also been told that's a no no. I've also heard that there are 225/45/17's that will fit both the front 7.5J and the rear 8.5J Prosperina rims.
