Oil weight

Okay, I did search this topic, but there was no info specific to the W204. I know these engines have been around for a bit now, but there may be new info. I use only Mobile 1 synthetic oil and I know MB recommends it for the new C. I searched my owners manual and found nothing. I asked my sales rep and he is taking too long to respond.

My question is:

Are we to use Mobile 1, 0w40 in the C300s and C350s?

Thanks.

Bryan

By the way, I can't believe the oil capacity of these engines.

Owners manual won't list them. Service booklet should have it (if they still print them for new cars). Or you can look here: www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html

Oil today

<<My question is: Are we to use Mobile 1, 0w40 in the C300s and C350s?>>

No. Mobil 1 5W40 Extended Performance has been factory fill for at least two years now and can be changed at 13K miles provided the fleece filter is used.

Other countries use other synthetics approved by MB.

I have never seen Mobil 1 5w-40 (or 0w-40) Extended Performance.

5w-40 ESP is for diesel engines only.

0w-40 is the correct oil.

Ahh. You have never seen it, therefore it does not exist. Perhaps you would like to drop by and peer into my engine. Or visit a US dealer who uses it.

And you live where?

Thank you. Just needed confirmation.

I am not waiting 13,000 miles though.

BTW, to the member who said he/she has never seen it. I have 5 qts in my garage right now. It's going in my girlfriend's Passat.

While they use M1 0W-40 for the AMG's, you can use it here since it meets the approval of MBZ. However, they now use Mobil 1 5W-40 fully syn.

Get a used oil analysis. I know it's peace of mind for folks like you, but synthetics have been proven to be able to go for well over 13,000 miles.

I am not disagreeing with you. I have been using synthetic oil for a long time. I have never let it go more than 5,000 miles. Oh well, old habits. I will consider it though since thes things hold twice as much oil as the other cars I have owned.

Thanks for quoting me. I just realized I spelled peace wrong. Now it's stuck in there forever.

Hey what do you mean "folks like you?"

Oh...the typo must have been corrected. In the part where you quoted me earlier, the typo was still in the quote box after I corrected it in my post.

Gas cars use Mobil 1 0W-40, i.e. sheet 229.5

Diesels use Mobil 1 Formula M 5W-40 ESP, i.e. sheet 229.51

ESP = emissions system protection

This oil is ONLY available at Mercedes dealers.

Use of ANY other oil in ANY quantity in the new diesels is prohibited.

"Factory fill" is NOT Mobil 1 at all but rather a Fuchs product, but that's irrelevant because you can't get it in the USA.

You do yourself a disservice if you remove the special breakin oil prior to the 13K or 10K recommended first service.

Finally, dealers buy oil in bulk and it's not so easy to have two bulk systems. After initially suggesting dealers change their bulk oils to the 5W-40 there's been a reversal suggesting it not be used in the gasoline cars.

You just haven't been around.

These aren't econoboxes and they aren't Detroit iron.

These are cars that can run all day at Autobahn speeds and the former aren't.

I'd love to hear where you got this info. Particularly the break-in oil story. Just today, when I took my car in for it's 3K mile inspection, I asked if M1 5W40EP was still being used. the answer was, they have used it for two years now on instructions from MBUSA. Gas & diesel.

It can be bought at NAPA.

Mercedes Benz made the switch to 5W-40 a long time ago. AMG's still use 0W-40.

Spec 229.51 can be used for both Diesel and Gasoline engines. I just asked my SA today.

Exactly right. I also asked MY SA today plus the 30 year tech (i've known him for 20 years) who looked my car over today, spotting a coolant seep which will be repaired with a new hose next week.

The Mobil 1 0w-40 and 5w-40 weights are not "Extended Performance" blends.
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...rformance.aspx

5w-20, 5w-30, 10w-30, and 15w-50 are available as "extended performance"

MBUSA says specifically on their website, in the owner's section, that 229.51 oils are for diesel engines only. This also supports what I have heard re: low ash oils being used in gasoline engines.

Your SA is wrong. Additionally, MB dealers must stock M1 0w-40 since it is the only 229.5 oil approved for use in AMG engines (no 229.51 oils are approved, since we no longer have diesel AMGs).

Thanks for the information. I'll have to get out to that there Autobahn.

Do all cars that run at Autobahn speeds all day have an eight-quart oil capacity?

My Volvo takes 6 quarts, but it only sees stop-and go traffic.

Also in terms of length of oil change -

It has actually been shown the oil provides more protection as it ages. Obviously, do the every 5,000 if you wish, but it isn't necessary at all.
