Don't have the car within reach to verify any of this, but if there's no visible way to access the bulbs from the exterior of the vehicle (via screws, or an entry plate on or near the cover of the bulbs) then it may just be you have to get to them from inside the trunk, behind the panel that is. I've worked on import vehicles which had small plastic covers within the trunks lids that popped off to give you access to such area's (for IE: a third brake light)...
On rare occasions (I doubt this would be the case since it is a license plate bulb), you may have to remove some interior cladding and or an entire panel to gain access to such places. If it's not in your manual, consult with your local service center. I'm certain they'll be of some assistance if not even take of the service for you free of charge...
Oh and lastly, besides the obvious (burnt out bulb), any other reason why you want to gain access to the license plate bulbs? Possible LED upgrade?

I got the LED license plate from Hoen.
However getting to the bulbs is extremely difficult and I attempted a couple times with any luck.
In the owners manual it states that due to the difficulty, it should be only done at the dealership.
I removed the screws and tried to pry off the black plastic trim (which is also part of the chrome strip above the license plate), but it only separates so much. I didn't want to break the plastic and I already made a couple marks in the paint, so I gave up. I also tried to remove the trunk lid interior liner, hoping to access the lights from behind but that didn't work either.

Hopefully this will help...
Based on this EPC picture, it looks like you need to compress the clips on the housing from both sides.

but the clips are much smaller than the light lens, so you will need to rig a long set of tweezers to try to squeeze the clips from the outside of the lens.

I would like to do this as well but it seems so hard for DIY.
By the way wonder if changing this bulbs to LED would give warning messages due to the low power consumption.

It's a free java based web applet. You can get it here...
http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/welcome.jsp
It will even provide you with part numbers for lots of things discussed on these forums, like...
C63 grill part nos.
parktronic part nos.
rear view camera part nos.
etc...

I posted this in Benzworld a couple weeks back.
Btw, can anyone confirm that LED's will work in place of the license plate bulbs in our cars? From what I heard, the car's computer will think there are no bulbs since LEDs have no wattage and cut off power to that area. Some people here are saying they got their LEDs on no problem, so I'm just wondering if you just simply replaced them or did some wire work and put resistors in as well.
I removed the whole lining of the trunk lid by removing the plastic pins that are set throughout the lining. I also removed the trunk lid arm covers and the plastic cover(the one with the red light) at the bottom of the trunk. All of these can be removed by hand except for the plastic cover with the red light. After removing these, I sat on the trunk facing away from the car and looked up at the back of the trunk lid. At this point, you will be able to see where the license plate bulb housings are. If you look closely, there is a black part of the housing that is clipped into place at four points of a translucent cover. Pop the black housing out of the translucent cover (this may take a bit of force, but don't overdo it). Once you get past that, it's just a matter of switching bulbs and putting everything back together.

my manual says the bulbs are a W5W....... Anyone know what that translates to for an over the counter bulb ? I'll get the LEDs and see if it trips a code. And then post pix.

I just got a pair of LED wedge bulbs from a local store and can confirm that they DO work on my C350. Only minor and probably negligible problem is that the car's computer tells you to replace the (in my case) left license bulb. I just press OK and the message never pops up again untill i turn off the car and turn it back on. Ususally, from what I've heard, the car's computer would have cut off the power to the bulb area since it thinks the bulb is burnt out, but it is not the case, so far, for the my C350. I will get pics up later tonight or tomorrow.
