Is changing oil & filter a straight forward job?

Is changing the oil & filter in the new C-class pretty straight fwd, is the release nut underneath?

I heard when you bring it into the dealer, they would suck out the oil. Anyone know the average cost to do it at the dealer vs. bringing it to a non-dealer shop to have it done?

Thanks.

In the U.S., service A is approximately $225 depending on dealer. However, you could get an oil change only, for less, a bit over $100.

If you take it elsewhere, make sure they use Mobil 1, since it has the 1 year service interval.

honestly i think you should take it in to the dealer. i have stopped taking the easy way out(things seem to go wrong). i say if you don't have someone you know and trust to service the car then you should be paying the dealer a visit. and not to mention its NEW!!!!!!!!!

And I say 20min in my garage spending $65 on an oil change is money better spent than a $225 rape by a dealer. Last I looked, new or not, it's still just oil and a filter ... and if you can't get that right, probably is best to take it to the dealer.

There's a writeup on the W203 forums on how to change your oil on a C350 (I think). Anyway, since the engines are the same, the procedure is too. You can buy a oil extractor online (Amazon) for like $70. MB approve Mobil1 can be purchased at your local auto parts store and a replacement MB fleece filter can be bought at your dealership.

Looks even easier than draining.

Many lease their cars so they don't care. Just go to the low cost provider.

e1000, yes, on the w203 section, there is a nice write up on oil change for the w203 with pictures and full details...its quite good. It even tells you where u can buy an oil extractor.

Thanks.

Speaking of which, I'll be taking my C300 in on Friday for the A service which is mainly an oil change. A $250 oil change at that. I'll have put just under 13,000 miles on it in about 6.5 months. They'll also do the rear seat, seat belt replacement and any other in warranty corrections.

Given the markup on this, I'd ordinarily do it myself. But considering that I don't want MB claiming that it wasn't done right to possibly sidestep a legit warranty claim, I thought it would be wiser at least on the first change to have the dealer do it.

It does seem strange that mine is higher than the $225 quoted by others on this thread.

You can buy a TopSider oil sucker from West Marine for about $50 which will suck the oil out the dipstick tube in about ten minutes. The same Mann filters can be bought online for far less than the dealer's prices.

The only downside is you must dispose of the old oil eventually.

I've been using a TopSider for years. And yes, it removes more oil than draining it out the bottom.

JimPap, I'll probaly bring it in to dealer to do the Service A and get them to do the add on stuff required like the back seat belt adj., wondering if this will include GPS maps upgrades?

I will probably eventually buy an oil extractor and try it myself, I have friend that works at a garage I can bring my old oil to dispose.

Crow,

It'll be interesting to see if there are any changes in the way the car runs.

I'll see if the work order says anything beyond the oil change and fluid top offs.

I have an oil extractor and it is a very great tool.
Very little mess and easy to use and I could change my oil frequently at a fraction of cost of taking it into the dealership. You could drop off the old oil at a local Auto Zone store for recycling for free.
