You already have 38K miles on the car? That's when the trans fluid should be changed.

To drain first remove the pan drain plug, then break of the little plunger inside the pan to get all the fluid out & you will need a new plunger.
You don’t have to remove the plunger, but can be very messy, as you have to remove the pan full of fluid.
Replace filter & gasket.
Then it gets filled from the drain plug under pressure.
To check/correct the level it’s almost impossible to do unless done at MB.
You ad a little more than what is necessary, than at a cretin temperature (checked with DAS) remove the filling device & watch the excess fluid come out & cap it before it starts to sputter.

Considering this is called for every 36,000 miles on most cars, and that they have equipment just for this, I would hope they do indeed know how to do this.Of course, there is always the risk as you suggest.

That's because when the next change is due, the car is out of warranty and they don't have to worry about it. If you think it can be changed once and then drive it forever, well...............

With the 722.6 thet were life time fill.
With the 722.9 they figure that would be a good idea to remove all the crap from the break in period & put fresh fluid.
I gess.

Actually, in the 2009 maintenance schedule, its a change every 40K miles consistently - not just one change at 40K.

The only thing I find excessive in the maintenance schedule I read for my 2009, is brake fluid every 20K miles. That really is excessive in my opinion.

A brake fluid change every two years ( ie 20,000 Miles) is standard practice for most vehicles.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic. i.e. it absorbs water. It's more time than distance related & should be replaced every two years to prevent corrosion in the system. As the BF absorbs water so it lowers the boiling point of the fluid. If the fluid boils you loose brakes - so do it every 2 years. This applies to all vehicles.
