Question 5 Speed Auto. Some owners feedback please

I find the transmission at times not too smooth when driving in the city.
about 1 out of 8 times when it changes gears, you notice it.
Sometimes it even feels like the car is being "catapulted" into the next gear.

I told the garage about when i brought the car in for it's 1st service A.
They couldn't find anything wrong with it, so they just reset it.

Nothing's changed though.

It's not something that is noticable to everyone though.
for instance my girlfriend hasno idea what i'm talking about,
and thinks the cars shifts gears just fine.

Do you guys have the same problem & Is this "normal"....?

Am i too **** about this maybe...?

Going back to the garage this Monday for some other issues
& would appreciate some input before that.

Cheers
Egon.

The 722.6 five speed transmission is a mature transmission, well sorted & ultra smooth. The only time you can achieve some discontinuity from it is if you are very clumsy with the throttle pedal & you catch it out just as the torque converter clutches are locking up or disengaging. Usually when snapping off the throttle & braking hard you can get a slight lurch out of the car. If you drive smoothly you should have no issues. If you do have problems other than the condition above something is wrong. Which gear change does this happen with? Does it happen in both S & C modes?

using 5 speed for 4 years I think it is enough for 4 cyliender engines smooth passing gear box. this auto has award and in the car market some manufacturers use this 5 speed auto gearbox even they say in their commercial video that ''We use Mercedes Auto Gearbox''

Well, that part is normal for sure...

Has it seemed to have gotten worse over time?

His car is diesel. It has huge torque & does not need 7 speeds. You are NOT so advanced in duh! americas.

I have a 4 cyl diesel C Class & find the 5 speed auto very smooth. But it can be caught out if it is driven without sensivitivity in some situations . Ie say when slowing to cross a railway line then a less than judicious push with the throttle will launch the car over the line a little quicker than expected.

I found it is a matter of getting to know my car & the problem disappears.

By the way my service book makes no mention of an oil change for the 5 speed auto. My MB workshop recommends to change the oil at 60,000 km which I am sure to do. Citreon came unstuck with their auto not having any programmed oil changes in their C5.

I rented a c220 for a month and did notice the gear changes were not as smooth as my 430, and I did experienced something similar to the catapult feeling you are describing. Changing the transmission to comfort did make it a lot smoother though.

This also helped in smoothing out the shifts.
