Oil Changing Question

I've searched the forums and cannot seem to figure something out. I want to do the oil change myself...thought is it possible to do without sucking the oil out from the top. Can't you just drain it from the bottom. Any insight would be helpful...Thank you so much!

yes, you can do either, but ideally, extracting from top is better.

If you want to make life hard for yourself drop the bottom cover plate & remove the drain plug.

Drain plugs are micro-encapsulated so chuck it out & fit a new one. If you are parsimonious then put thread sealant on the plug before reusing it or it will leak.

Hello Glyn, I changed the oil in my 220 CDI yesterday by the draining method . I was heartened to see the MB old fashioned copper washer method of sealing the plug on the diesel model. It is good practice to at least change the washer at each draining. Tight **** John.

Be advised that if you have a 4MATIC model (like I do), the working theory on the DIY oil change thread here is that you cannot fully suck the oil out using the dip tube method, because the bottom of the pan doesn't allow the tube to be inserted to the low point. For my next change, I am going to try it with a tube that slides over the diptube, rather then down it, to see if I get more then 7Q out.

The dealers (following MB's instructions) drain the 4matics using the suction method. So there is no way it doesn't work properly. I'm not sure if the dealer puts a tube into the dip stick neck though - I think it attaches to the top which might make a difference. I know that the tube method works great on my W203 4matic which also has a modified oil pan compared to the non 4matic.

Yes, they use an over the top of the tube method at the dealer, not a dipstick tube.

I'll know for sure in about 3 months when I do my next change, whether the over the top method gets more out of the W204 4MATIC.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to just buy the extractor and do it from the top?
That method was by far the easiest oil change I have ever done on any car.

I used the Mityvac 7201 on my C300 recently & got basically the 8.8 litre container topped off so that when I inserted the plug - it pushed oil back out the tube.

This confirmed to me that the this method works (again) to get all the oil out.
There will always be a half qt caught up in the engine's valves & pistons somewhere no matter what - draining or suctioning.

Yeah John - the diesel is a little more agricultural!

That's fine for most cars and rwd w204's, NOT for 4matics. Dealer suction method works well (adaptor attaches to top of dipstick tube), but DIY suction method leaves a quart or two in sump ( plastic tube inserted in dipstick tube does not reach pan, likely due to AWD).

I brought this 4matic oil change issue up a few months ago, and one or two guru's here (who did NOT own a 4matic) suggested I was wrong.

Yes, I do recall you mentioning that. I also do not own a 4matic so I can't comment on that either. I belive the op did not mention anything about 4matic either so he should be good to go.
