C220 CDI Slow acceleration no power, help
Mercedes c 220 diesel auto, slow acceleration no power when you hit the gas peddle. Seem to get to 60 mph and thats it? Can anyone give me an idea of what it may be and is it serious

Quite high milage
its a 2003 with 98k on the clock, it has been recently serviced - or so it says in the service book and on the computer. No engine codes are showing up either

MBWorld Fanatic!
Being a 2003 year model it is a W 203. It may be benificial if you post in that forum or the Diesel Forum. You may receive more info.
At 98,000 the engine is not run in.
There are so many possible problems the only way is to visit a decent diesel mechanic with the MB electronic monitoring equipment.
It could be in limp mode.
Or blocked air cleaner, blocked fuel filters, fuel p/p fault, Electronic metering fault ect , turbo fault, blocked exhaust fault.
Is the auto trans operating normally?
I will be interested to know how you get on.
How long have you had the car ? . Are you used to turbo lag?

I have a similar problem with my 2002 cdi220, but the limp mode seems to happen after 4th gear whilst in normal auto mode...if i drive using the step-box then its fine until i change from 4th to D. then it seems to slip and the revs hike to about 4500 almost as if it has missed a gear!
if this is such a common problem then why did merc not program the ecu to show a fault, considering when the fuel hits reserve it considers this a malfunction...
should I be worried?

I had the same Problems about a year ago with c220 for months!!! loss of power no gear change loads of engine back pressure i took it to loads of different garages got ripped off no 1 could diagnose the fault until my neighbour put me on 2 a garage in Bootle Liverpool, great guy diagnosed and fixed it same day very cheap Dave his name is 07419379966 give him a call i only use this garage now and highly recommend anyone to try him rather than get ripped off like i have been would love to list what garages to avoid but unfortunately its against the terms good luck

c220cdi 2002 limp mode
thanks for the reply hydroart , any idea what the problem was?
I am in South Africa, so I wont be taking my car to your mechanic...
I did have a mech look at the diagnostics and we replaced the MAF sensor but it still showed a fuel air mix fault
turns out the intake has a loose or eroded part inside, apparently its common for diesels and it upsets the fuel/air mix which can cause the computer to kick in the limp home mode...
but to remove it and replace seems like a big and costly job...
Is it possible to install a good second hand intake assembly?

Does the car smoke under acceleration? Can also be turbo or wastegate or wastegate controller.
Nothing wrong with serviceable used parts.

Hi Glyn, its not smoking and the mech i took it to checked the boost pressure on the diagnostic, he did say it was probably due to the failing of the flaps or the linkage in the inlet manifold, i took off the boost pipe and it was very gummed up , so im pretty sure that the rest of it would be filthy, do you perhaps know of a spares dealer or should i keep trying ebay? maybe an engineering shop could service it?

That's good news. Turbo problems can be expensive. I'm only used to the M272 manifold flap problem & not the diesels. I'm sure any good engineering shop could repair the manifold. Everyone I know will want to sell you a complete engine. You could look around scrap yards for a damaged engine that someone will strip.

I am reliably informed that oven cleaner is an excellent cleaner of air inlet manifold flaps. A colleague left his manifold to soak overnight and it worked a treat. Short mileage trips tends to gum up the flaps. Be worthwhile taking the car for a high speed run evry few weeks if its only used as a run around

I had the same problem where the car would choke and flat spot under acceleration but only intermittently and reading some of the posts i had a long list of what was causing the problem from ECU resets, throttle body not opening or closing turbo knackered and the list goes on and on, scary stuff so i was thinking it may be better to scrap the car rather than chase what could be an expensive fix.anyway one of the options was to simply change the fuel filter and the cheapest too, which i did and now the car drives great and and it cost me a tenner, try this first guys.
