2019 GLA 250 - I am in purgatory right now...
What grade of oil to use?
Hey Gang,
I look under the hood and I see Mobile 1 0W40. I check my service recipts and I see Synpower 5W40. I read the owners manual and I don't see any reccomendation at all.
Somewhere (maybe here - but searching the forums I come up dry) I recall seeing a temperature vs oil weight we should be using specific for our 204's.
Reason I ask, we are over 90deg lately and sure enough after one hour of shutting the motor down when I start it again I hear a knocking sound coming from the engine. I've had it in the dealer and they say it's normal. I have had the problem since day one. I said the heck with it and have just been driving it anyway. But I am at 48500K miles and after 50K my warrantee will be up. Then it will be my problem....
Thanks for replying.
Rick

On domestic cars, a knocking sound at start up usually means that a hydrolic lifter hasn't fully pumped up.
Not sure if that transfers to our 204s, but I've not had that experience.
As for oil, I think Mobile 1 0w40 european blend is recommended.

We went over this noise in depth in another thread. I wish / hope it was only lifter noise - but it's a noise at engine speed, not half engine speed. I have first hand experience in what a crank knock sounds like - and that's sure what it sounds like...
The only logical answer to the question was a post by someone who suggested that there is a check valve which may not be sealing fully allowing oil to drain back into the pan, I've had it in for service they acknowledged the sound but said it was normal, no service is reccomended. I decided not to worry about it, that is untill now...

The Synpower 5W40, the Mobil 1 (European Formula) 0W40, several 5W30 among a few others meet Mercedes sheet 229.5, which is the spec for C300 engines (all 100 and 200 series gasoline engines). So the oil you are using is OK.
The root of the noise is a different matter. I don't know how often you changed the oil during the 48500 miles, but this is not the only factor to consider. Gas used, cooling solution, lead shoes, etc... all factors in the equation which can go from being nothing as the dealer implied to running with some problem which becomes more evident as time passes by. Check at an indie who knows what he is doing and has good diagnosis equipment. Pay for a written report, then go to a/the dealer.

It is certainly not a lifter which would make a clicking and not a knocking sound. And it has nothing to do with lubrication since both cars had/have their Mobil 1 0W40 changed every 5000 miles. And it is heard on hot and cold starts so it's not particularly temp related.
And 0W40 provides all the lubrication these engines need. There are engines producing twice the power that use the same oil which is factory fill.
