NAV +4 Installation Recently?
Has anyone had a NAV +4 installed recently?
I am considering having this installed on my car. This is the Mercedes media interface add-on that gives you iPod connectivity, Bluetooth music streaming, and NAVI on the small LCD already in the car.
I'm a bit worried the dealership will scratch up my dash or something, but perhaps it's easy for them.
I searched for Nav+4 reviews, but didn't find anything.
Thanks!

I just did it a couple of weeks ago. I cannot see how the dealer could scratch your dash if they don't do it at the engine oil change.
You could do it yourself too if you find the WIS instructions and familiarise yourself with the task well in advance.

If this is mostly about the nav function, I cannot see the value of that installation given the alternative of a better nav at about one-quarter to one-fifth the cost, just about as conveniently mounted.

But, if you want all the other audio system features, the above won't be sufficient for you.

I got the unit at about one quarter of the US dealer price (Euro unit). I bought it only for the maps. This way everything is integrated to the car, the antenna is well positioned and the display is at instrument cluster level and easy to read. Nothing that attracts thieves.

Which other audio system features are you referring to that would be missing from a car with standard audio plus Navi + 4?

Please let me clarify.....if he simply bought a Garmin and Arkon mount, he would have better nav, but not the additional Ipod/Bluetooth features he mentions of the Navi+4. If those were not important, he could get better nav for much less money (although it sounds like you found a way around the pricing, but still had a few hundred in labor?). With Arkon, the antenna is well positioned, display is at instrument panel level, even tilted to line of sight comfort, and easy to read. Goes in glove box on arrival in about 10-15 seconds. This comes down to personal valuation of features vs. cost, and we won't all come out with the same equation.
Considering my choice, I did not pay few hundred in labour because I did it myself, including the cluster version coding. Excluding version coding, any MB enthusiast should be able to complete the task if properly prepared for it.
Thanks for the clarification on the audio features, I thought you were referring to some features that were missing from the Navi + 4 approach.

Speaking of Nav+4 or UMI...I was informed by MBUSA that an update described on www.benzblogger.com is now available and comes w/ new maps...for the price of $199...
http://www.benzblogger.com/2009/11/e...now-nav-4.html
I am trying to find out how the update is performed and if it is disc base or usb flash drive base, then maybe I will start a sharing program...

I think I've seen a write-up but there is a perfect guide in WIS and your workshop should have heard of WIS. Coding is only needed for the cluster. Since they are using Xentry for the W204, there is not much room for confusion because it does not allow much version coding without SCN coding. Actually after late 2009 or so, cars have to be SCN coded (an option code added to allow proper SCN code).

@Diesel Benz: Thanks. I guess the knowledge of the local shops here are vary here. I tried 2 shops, no kidding . Finally the last one managed getting all parts being installed, but not yet able to activate it. They told me "awaiting to receive coding from Germany for COMAND programming". Not sure what they meant, but being told to wait for at least a week to bring the car back once they receive info from Germany. Fingers crossed...

What is your car's exact build date? If it is late 2009 or 2010, it needs SCN coding and perhaps your workshop was not able to do it on-line or perhaps it is not allowed in the US. This would explain the need to wait.

@Diesel Benz: before confusing others, need to clarify...mine was a media interface (Option 518) add on, is it same as NAV+? I had it ordered for COMAND ad ons. It is for 2008 made car.
Yes they don't have online service so they have to wait.

Hi, I just had the Nav + 4 installed last week in my 2010 C300. I am in Canada. The Nav is very functional but not the most hi tech. Once you play with settings I am happy with it. I like that you can select addresses or POI while moving. My old 2006 Infiniti G35 did not allow you to enter addresses unless the vehicle was stopped. Uses the same Navteq maps that my iPhone 4 with Navigon uses. It does not have the most current maps but those were just updated Dec 15 2010 and I have contacted Navteq about a USB update. The dealer says a USB map update will be released by MB soon. When you use both the map and the Multifunction Display it works really well. The music from the radio, iPod or USB is not affected by the turn by turn instructions on the Nav. The current and next street to turn at are just on the MFD, just the current street is on the Map. iPod integration is perfect, easy to use. USB is great and I can jump between the sources easily. It does charge the iPod/iPhone. Haven't got the Bluetooth streaming working yet but with an extra iPod and a USB with over 600 (mp3 only on USB) songs in the glove box I don't need it.
Overall a worthwhile addition to my car that meets my needs and is integrated with the rest of the MB controls. Any questions let me know.

Hi Kial,
The Nav +4 is formally the UMI?, did you have it installed at the dealer, what was the final cost, I'm curious, I'm in Canada also and the dealers around here are asking $1895.00 + install. From what I read above NickCats had some major issues with the install at his dealer. Did you have any issues, how long was the car in?

I had the Nav +4 installed. The dealer did not scratch anything. I had to bring the car back to get it coded for the cluster because they didn't know how to do it at first. I really want the functionality of USB. The sad/funny part is my GMC Terrain has USB Standard and a Nav system with 40 GB hard drive but cost 2K. As others have stated, the nav part is pretty low tech, but it works.

No problems with the installation, took about 5 hours.
The manual says Nav + 4, but it says UMI on the screen when it boots up with the lid open.
I understand that mine has the current software for Nav, the same as the factory installed one.
The manual is kind of confusing and you can download it on line but it is very intuitive when you actually use it. Let me know when you get it and I will tell you a couple of tricks I learned.
I have had it for almost 3 months now and I use the iPod and/or USB everyday and the Nav very often. I got a dock extender for $6 to extend the iPod connector so i can charge my iPhone and have it near me also.
I use my car for work and it is great for finding clients addresses instead of just using my iPhone or a paper map.
I am really glad I spent the money on the Nav + 4 as it is like the factory version (without the voice command of course), fully integrated into the MB system instead of an after market compromise.
The more I use the Nav the more I like it. Newer maps would be great but it has 99% of the destinations and routes I need as is. *Can even search for Tim Horton's!!
