Rain Sensing Wiper Question

I'm still learning about my new car.

Yesterday was a rainy day in Germany. I wanted to test out my rain-sensing wipers so I switched my wipers on to the first position. It wasn't raining very hard so the blades would wipe at what seems to be normal intervals, but then all of a sudden the wipers would go on really fast for about 10 wipes and then go back to the regular slower intervals. Is this by design or is something fluky going on?

Same here.

Sometimes, they'll just come on for a single swipe without any rain, dust or anything that you'd expect to trigger them.

My first experience with MB rain-sensing wipers was in a test drive of a 2006 or 2007 CLK. I thought they were control by an insane random number generator. Then a coworker bought a 2005 E55, and made comments similar to those posted above. Then I got my 2004 S55 expecting to be driven mad by them. On the contrary, I quite like their behavior, and find that most of the time they perform quite well, with only the occasional "WTF was that for?" wiping episode. They even do well in snow. Yes, I drive my car in snow.

Haha.

Ok. Thanks, guys. I'm glad my abnormal wiper functionality is "normal".

Is it possible to retrofit the rain sensor? That was a feature that I overlooked when I ordered my car.

Yes, if you are prepared to change the glass. Forget any kind of post bonded sensor. That is where early problems arose. Hope your car has the right harness.
Good luck!

How can I tell if the harness is correct? And why do you say that I'd need to change the glass?

There is a doda on the windshield that the rear view mirror/rain sensor gizmo attaches to.

Take your VIN to a Benz dealer & ask them or dismantle the mirror & take a look.

Jim has answered the glass issue.

I actually quite like my rain-sensing wiper. Only occasionally, and mainly during snow does it ever go hay-wire and wipe really fast. But it isn't anywhere near as insane, crazy or unpredictable as my cadiallac escalade rain-sensing wipers, those things need to get checked into a psych ward...

My rain sensor acts up too. It sometimes goes bananas in light rain when the car is stopped at a red light. The BMW sensor was so much nicer to me...

I wish I could be a way to just disable the rain sensors. It always wipes a little more than I would like it to.

Mine seem to work flawlessly, however, I only deal with fog drizzle and light to moderate rain. In my experience, they work much better than the ones found on Lexus vehicles, because at least they wipe. Sometimes in our other cars, they dont wipe even when there is plenty of rain on the windshield.

Have you guys notice just how substantial the wipers are on these cars? Makes other wipers look like poor excuses for wipers.
