Subwoofer shoot out....

Budget is the name of the game....

If you had to chose one or the other, which do you take?

JL AUDIO 12" SUBWOOFER 12W0V2-4

or

Infinity Reference 1260w 12-Inch

If you want quality that can get a bit loud at a very reasonable price, get an Image Dynamics IDQ 10 or 12, if you want loud with quality but needs a substantial amount of power, get the Image Dynamics ID MAX 10 or 12. either one will outperform any of the previously mentioned subs in sound quality or SPL, respectively.

It appears you are looking for $100 subwoofers. The other suggestions are more expensive, but you get what you pay for. I normally support JL Audio, but I would not use the W0 line. They are not very efficient and the W0 and WX aren't made like other JL Audio subwoofers. If you want JL at a lower price point- go with the 12W1v2 sub. Image Dynamics are incredible subwoofers and you can get the ID series for around $180.

Agreed on the JL. Also you can usually find gently used or new open box IDQ's popping up on ebay from time to time. If you want punchier bass go with a 10 in a sealed box, throatier bass go 12 ported box

I second the Image Dynamics

I had an Image Dynamics ID Max V2 12". That was the best sub ive ever owned (i have owned many). Great balance between SQ and SPL.

Sounds like (hahahhahahaha pun) you fellas prefer subs over $100.

I am looking to spend about $600 installed for a sub, amp, enclosure, amp wiring kit and a signal processor...

do you have folding seat Richie? bc if you dont its a pain getting a good/strong sound from the very sealed trunk of the car.

Yes sir 2011 with folding rear seats.

Here's what I need from a sub, bass in the cabin of the car - no bass for cars around me.

The factory stereo is fine, I just need some sub bass.

Suggestions? Do I really need the sound processor?

The sub & amp combo I posted up should be far more than adequate and after all the installation materials you'd still be at ~$300. Anyone that charges more than $200 to install it all is probably thinking "ooh he has a mercedes..."

If you want accurate sound then JL Audio are unbeatable. If you want ghetto blaster, monotone boom & slam anything will do.

And... incorrect. JL are decent woofers. I've seen so many of them crap out at competitions (for years and years now) that I'll never ever buy one. I'd take an IDQ (cleaner) or and IDMAX (Cleaner and Louder) any day over any JL you can throw at me, and probably spend less and have a wider variety of enclosure options.

JL is good, but there not the holy grail of subwoofers. like above i've seen a number of them "crap" out and lose in competition to lesser known names. JL is VERY good don't get me wrong, i've had 2 JL set ups,(w10 & w7's) but ive had set ups that were a lot cheaper than the JL products and they out performed them.

You will not outdo a JL in sound quality. Making loud booms - yes anytime. We are considering different things.

Petty that Velodyne or Paradigm don't make auto subs.

Velodyne did make servo controlled subs for cars a while back, when people were getting experimental (anyone remember the phoenix gold cyclone? http://audiojunkies.com/forum/subwoo...3-cyclone.html) but it didn't work out well because of the harsh conditions of vehicles. I could name about 10 manufacturers off the top of my head whose subs will make a JL sub sound like it belongs in an impala. (DLS, Morel, Dynaudio, Focal, Rainbow, etc)

Stick one of these $12,000 beauties in your trunk with an inverter.

The high end would disagree with you.

Yes - I use 4 X Velodyne servo subs in my theatre with Maggie 20.1's

there's just no way to compare sound quality in different cars as each setup is completely different. They're also tuned differently.

I've run my share of different setups (from custom trunks to normal enclosures) and imho they all sound the same as long as the position and setup is right. The competitions are based upon setup. I've seen my share of JL's crappin out as well as other top end brands. I've heard Bazooka tubes sound better then some high end setups.

The only way you'll find what sounds best is having both subs and being able to swap them out with the same config.

I agree that a car is a hostile environment for audio. You can only get it fair. Never accurate.

one of the biggest things with an auto set up when dealing with how you have your enclosure built. you can have a box built with sound quality being your main focus or have one just for "loud booms". JL is probably the most well known Subwoofers on the market so ppl assume them to be the best and when seeing there hight MSRP ppl would expect them to be superb but in reality there not. i've had multiple set ups and ive been to a lot of sound performance meets and i have yet to see a JL outperform. Rockford Fosgate, DD, IDMAX over a JL any day, sound quality or just general loudness.

I agree 100%, but Glyn and tehc have good points, a car is the worst place humanly possible to try to accurately reproduce music, and a well tuned and designed inexpensive system will sound 10 times better than the most expensive drivers in the world just thrown in a car with no "plan of attack".

UGH...so sick of hearing people blurt out the same misconceptions that JL is the best.

I'd prefer any of the below for less cost than an overpriced JL

Image Dynamics
Sundown
Treo
SSA
Digital Designs
etc etc etc
