Non-Navi to Navi?

Quick question, if I purchased this or a unit similar http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Merce...fAudioQ5fVideo would it be an easy swap? I dont mean easy as in the install I basically mean would it work? All I would have to just buy a us map dvd correct?

I have an 08 c300 sport with the little 5 inch screen no navi. I would def get it professionally installed but i wanted to know b4 I got it.

Thanx. p.s. I searched but my search strings wasnt giving me the answer i was looking for.

Having owned MM on my 08 it isn't worth the time and money. Buy a good after market Navi like a Garmin or Tom-Tom.

I agree with Ron...aftermarket navs are higher performing units than the ones in MBs. Better functionality and detail, and from what you can read on this forum, not the same number of odd problems. Also, the cost differential is significant, with a good Garmin for a couple of hundred dollars versus about $2,000 to retro the MB unit.

The BIGGEST plus in my personal experience, has been portability. I've brought my Garmin and used it on business trips in other states, in Canada, and also when on vacation in Europe and South East Asia.

I looked into doing this retrofit as well. Usually the cost for the parts is upwards of $1,500 - $2,000 just for the parts, not including labor. There is a DIY involved for doing the retrofit. But you need air ducts, fans, etc, in addition to the two main hardware pieces in that Ebay listing (screen and comand unit). Also, you need to find someone that has star diagnostics developer package to program in that you have command system to your car. Seems very complicated, along with having to gain access to the power box under the driver seat carpet and pull out the speedo cluster for mounting the gps transmitter.

What I have instead is a blackberry Bluetooth A2DP transmitter in my glovebox that plays my iPhone music wirelessly. I just have the transmitter sit in the glovebox, powered off the cigarette lighter and plugged into the AUX headphone jack in there. If you have the optional iPod Kit there is also one that is in the recent threads that will retain steering wheel controls and simply power off the apple dock connector.

I don't have a standalone GPS unit anymore. I simply use my iPhone for EVERYTHING. There is always an app for whatever you need. Plus, I didn't even have to buy any paid apps, there are plenty of GREAT FREE gps turn by turn apps for the iPhone (mapquest, waze - which has awesome user generated traffic updates). And best of all, I can still listen to my music and when I have directions the app automatically dims down the music and I can loudly hear the directions, all through the factory car stereo. Can't beat it!

Sounds good. Saving money IS always a plus. I'm also like u I use my iPhone for everything and then some. Ill also start researching the Bluetooth wireless play. I was wondering if it was possible but being as tho I only had the car for about 3 weeks I've been caught with all the other quick mods.

Hows the sound when playing through bluetooth? I kno the aux plug sucks. I don't need it to blow my ears off but a decent enough sound if I need it up a tad.

If it's good I'll just let it play wirelessly (for music) and like u said u navigon for navi purposes. This way all I'll have to buy is the vent mount and whatever's needed for the bluetooth to work.

Btw I'm on iPhone 4

I agree with what a lot of people here have said. I have MM on my 09 and I'm extremely disappointed in its lack of functionality:
  • POI search is clunky and incomplete
  • Contacts can't be imported via Bluetooth
  • No FM realtime traffic
  • iPod integration is terrible and can't be controlled or viewed via COMAND
  • iPod interface cable won't charge the iPhone 3g/3gs/4 or any of the newer iPods
  • No A2DP streaming

Some of these issues have been addressed since 2009, but the state of Mercedes' telematics is embarrassing compared to what's available in the rest of the industry. Except for the smaller screen, you're better off with the stock Audio 20 system and just adding the UMI/NAV+4 unit. Functionally, it's better than the full COMAND system in almost every way. It's frustrating and sad.

For all the members that want A2DP streaming, it can be added easily with the AnyStream plugged into the end of the iPod cable. Inexpensive and easy.... and you won't have to deal with the crappy MB ipod interface. Just an FYI.

Also if you want to enable charging, you can with the Pass n Charge.

5'' Nav Screen to Pop-up

I have Nav+4 factory-installed in my 2010 C 300 Sport, but am now interested in upgrading to the pop-up screen. The 5-inch, in-dash screen just isn't cutting it for me anymore. I'd also like to switch it from a U.S.-spec nav system to a European one, now that I'm living in Europe, but I know that's a whole separate issue. But on the 5"- to-pop-up upgrade/retrofit, has anyone done so successfuly and, ahem, hopefully inexpensively? Thanks!

are there any aftermarket indash screens? having a unit on my vent or window is tacky for me. I want it clean and streamlined. Has anyone done an aftermarket indash like alpine, pioneer, etc.

Does anyone know where this thread is? I've tried searching, but haven't been able to find it. I would like to play my music wirelessly while keeping my steering wheel controls.
