I talked to the SA again and he checked with the mechanic and confirmed that they will do the TC drain as well. I dropped off the car this morning for the minor service along with transmission flush and brake fluid change. Will check their invoice when I pick up the car today to confirm they used 9L of new fluid. Otherwise I will challenge them according to the documents/instructions posted in this thread.

Awesome, let us know know it goes. I'm curious to see if the dealers in Canada have any more/less knowledge on this.

Alright...went to pick up the car yesterday evening and saw 5.5L of transmission fluid used. As soon as I saw this, I knew what was this about (again thanks for this thread). I talked to the SA (different one as the one I was dealing with already left) and he said they follow MB guideline etc. Then I pulled the document posted in this thread (AP27.00-P-2702W) and showed him everything from added Step 6 to drain TC to total of 9L to be used. He didn't say a single word after that....he immediately sent an email to the Foreman and the SA I was dealing with. He promised me someone will get back to me this morning. I told him if this is not resolved and redone in the right way, I will escalate to the MB corporate and will not come back to that specific dealership for future service. I sent this strong message to him and then went home.

This morning, my SA called to confirm that my TC does NOT have the drain plug and that is why they didn't drain the TC and ended up using 5.5L fluid and the cost was lower. He told me that they internally talked to the Foreman as well as some other experts and checked my VIN and confirmed that my tranny is 722.96 and does not have the drain plug. If this is true, I am OK with it and will eventually have to do the transmission flush every 60K Km. But how can I verify and confirm what the dealership has said is true?

Any help will be appreciated. The document does state that 9L will be used only on 722.9 EXCEPT 722.93/960-966.

How can I verify by using my VIN that my tranny is 722.960?

Hope this help others too....

If you have a credit card with a US billing address, you can get a free subscription to http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/home.jsp that will show the details on the car (data sheet) and part numbers. The part numbers listing is not as good as the dealer's database. You need a computer that can run JAVA 7.

Also if you call the mbz parts department and ask if they will give you the part number for the TC drain plug with gasket for your mbz and vin xxxx.

May be I should try calling the parts department as I don't have any CC with US address.

Haha...just called the same dealer's Parts department and he asked me for the last 8 digits of my VIN and gave me the TC drain plug's part number as "0019901117". Then I asked him if my transmission is 722.9 and he said YES!

So what am I going to do? I don't want to put this Parts guy in trouble, but want to talk to someone above these dealership to confirm my transmission is 722.9, not 722.96.

May be I should double check with another dealership's Parts department.

The key point to all of this is that you wished to change ALL the oil in the gearbox. How it is done is immaterial.

This was not done.

Ask them to do it .

Called another dealership and he asked for the last 6 digits of the VIN and gave me the price for the TC drain plug, but refused to give me the part number. Then I asked him to check my transmission and he said it is 722.9!

Will see if I can call MB Canada tomorrow morning and file a complaint. May be I should send an email to my SA before talking to the Corporate office.

You could either contact the Service Manager at the dealership (not just a Service Advisor), or you could contact MB Canada and present all of your information to them.
If the dealer still insists that draining the TC is not required, ask them for their opinion in writing and compare it to what MB Canada tells you.

The datacard should show the transmission as
7229## ## ###### where # are numbers.

7229## is the model followed by the ID number of the transmission.
all the 7 speed transmission might be 7229 including the exceptions. You need the last two digits to get the specific model of the 7G NAG.

If give your full VIN here or on the datacard look up section of the board, someone may look it up for you.

I forgot. Ask the dealer's service or parts department to print out the datacard for you. It's good to have a hard copy with the car.

This kind of shows the same thing I'm going through now (trying to be proactive). I am talking with a 2nd MB dealership (the first one told me my car doesn't have the TC plug when it's a 2010 and def does). I've spoken to 2 different techs at the 2nd place (I don't think they realize). Both asked for my VIN. One came back and said they still can't tell until they get the car in, the 2nd said I should have it based off the VIN.

What's frustrating is that it appears even if they tell you that you have it, they might not drain it anyways lol.

Here some good links:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w209...-change-3.html

From Rudeny's post:
"...My understanding is that all 722.9 transmissions used in the W203/W209/W211, etc. have the drain plug. Here is the official WIS documentation:

http://benzbits.com/722_9/FluidFilterChange.pdf
http://benzbits.com/722_9/TorqueConverterDrain.pdf

You can see that it calls for draining the torque converter if there is a drain. It does indicate one version, the 722.93 used in the SL63/65 models, that does not get drained."

The 722.96 has 9.7 Liter instead of 9.0 L of ATF.
The 722.901 had the old style drain pan with black weir tube. It looks like all models have the new pan and white weir tube (although mine looked tan color).

I still don't have an expert view if draining the TC by the drain plug is detrimental to the life of the tranny. Would it be better after the first ATF change to pump then TC ATF out by the engine ? drain, replace filter, gasket, bolts and refill, disconnect cooler line return, run engine to remove 3 L, refill, run to remove 3L, reconnect line and refill, adjust ATF volume at 113 *F. or 40-45 *C. Takes more time, but what is better ?

I don't like "Flushes" without filter change. No clean filter and will likely kick up lots of crude to the filter.

OK, the Service Manager sent me the Datacard for my VIN and it states the Transmission as "722964 01 932169".

That means my transmission is an Exception that does NOT have the TC drain plug? According to the document AP27.00-P-2702W, this seems to be true.

Any expert thought on this so that I can put this to bed?

My car has done 60 000km since it's previous tranmission 'service' and went in for a B1 service yesterday. I requested that the also do a transmission oil change but the SA phoned my during the day explaining that this won't be done as they do not subscribe to the 60 000km intervals but will only do a transmission service when prompted by the onboard diagnostics and that my car is still fine as there is nothing indicated on the diagnostic system.

My car as the full Mobilo Plan 120+ which means I don't pay for any maintenance up to 120 000km. This plan will however expire within 2 000 odd kilometers and I will then have to pick up the tab for the tranny service myself.

Have you checked the service manual? I think it says you should change the transmission fluid at 60,000 Km. I think you should take that to the dealer and challenge.

Is the TC drain plug visible from the outside? As per my note, my transmission is 722.964 and the MB dealer still claims it does NOT have the TC drain plug and therefore they used only 5.5L of replacement fluid instead of 9.7L. I don't know how much of this is true...

On the link to the TC shows how to see if it has a drain plug. It's only visible with the TC rotate at certain positions after removal of the rubber plug.

As I understand the .964 exception is in the volume of ATF (+0.7L) and should have a TC drain plug. The .93x does not have the drain plug (see P27.00-2136-09 page 2, section 6). See section 15 for filling on .950 and .96x for filling AR27.00-P-0270SYZ.

Anybody have a copy of AR27.00-P-0270SYZ ?

The first AFT changes will be very dirty due to the new clutch pack.

My TC ATF was not drained. Likely some gunk in it from the clutch pack. Next time I will ask that the TC be drained to remove the gunk. I will try not to lose any sleep over it. The pan and cooler AFT was changed (7 QT used). Likey about 2/3 of the ATF, but that won't get the settlement in the TC out.

If the MBZ parts depart gave a PN for the TC plug with gasket, your car will likely have the plug.

Nevermind...I think you were referring to the WIS posted by Glyn. After reading more, I have an understanding of how the TC drain screw is located. Still searching for some good color pictures in the threads....
