p0455 CEL :( Oh man...someone please help.

Hi everyone, Kimo here.

I finally finished doing the coilovers on my car the day before yesterday and I love the look. Though, just yesterday driving with my wife she said the CEL came on, so I took it to autozone and OReilly's, they both said P0455 which is gas cap. I took a look at the gas cap and it seemed ok...though I don't know how many times it's suppose to click to lock on, but mine only clicks once. 2008 C300 Luxury Sedan model. I've done quite of bit of googling, but I can't find much on the C300, but tons on C63. I also took a look at the Purge Valve and it seems ok...though I don't know what im looking at, or what to look for. My friend suggested to give it a few taps with something, as something maybe lodged in or stuck. Gas cap seemed fine, muffler rattled a tiny bit at start up before the drive when the code came on. Car runs perfectly fine, no rough idle...accelerates fine. I don't get it...I don't want to pay alot of money at Mercedes if its something easy taht I can do. Someone please help...thank you.

So i checked under the hood, the oil dip stick was sticking out a good ways, wasn't properly on all the way. The check engine light is still on, but could this be the reason it's throwing a gas cap code? I wouldn't think the oil dipstick would have anything to do with the gas cap, or emission/evap line system would it? Im not an intelligent mechanic, so any input would be greatly appreciated. I jacked the car up, no leaks, the coilovers were installed and tightened down nicely, everything is driving fine with no creaks...could the coilover install be related to this? Or is it just bad timing with the CEL?

Please help someone. Thank you!

Hi RulesLawyer, thank you for your response. I inspected for the holes and leaks, but I do not see any gas coming out anywhere. No tears or holes from what I can see under the car. Would the engine oil dipstick be part of the leak? As I discovered it wasn't all the way secured in. It was sticking out about 2 + inches when I opened the hood today. I set it in secure, but the CEL is still on. Maybe it will take a few days to reset itself, or maybe I might have to take it to the dealership to get it reset?

- Thank you

If you don't reset the codes they can take a few cycles to clear on their own if you fix them (like screw the gas cap on tighter)

I would need a OBD2 scanner in order to reset the codes myself is that correct?
Otherwise, i'll have to wait for them to reset on their own?

EECS leaks can be a pain to find if it is not just a leaking gas cap. It can be anything from a cracked filler pipe to a leaking joint to a leaking carbon canister or troublesome purge valve.

If the gas cap seal is OK have the system smoke tested.

I bought a obd2 scanner and it's says o2 snr and o2 htr as well as misfire and Evan leak. Wow! So I guess il take it to mercedes of Austin tomorrow. I hope this will get fixed, Glynn m ruck, your reply is scary. I hope they find out what's wrong, and that my aftermarket ford esp covers it. I've taken it in for a bad key fob and ford esp covered it, I hope they cover it with this too. Seeing as I have a 100 deductible and bumper to bumper warranty coverage with them. Wish my luck please guy! Thank you.

Don't be scared. None of the EECS components are expensive. Finding the leak can be labour wise.

Turns out when I installed the coilovers, one of the struts took off a hose off the gas tank. Now I need a new gas tank, which the warranty won't cover as it's my fault.

A word of advice for everyone installing coilovers...watch the hoses! They aren't replaceable, you will need a whole new gas tank.

2632.82 quoted to me for parts and labor.

Im so disappointed in myself right now. Won't be done till Thursday at the latest...

Rules Lawyer - This has happened to another member here on this forum in the C63 section. He glued his hose back onto the fuel tank, as it's designed to be part of the fuel tank and not removable or replaceable. The design is crappy I agree with him. The area I live, I really do not trust indie shops. The Mercedes dealership in Austin has always been good to me, upfront and honest. I have no reason not to trust them, they even sent me a pick of the screw up.

NOTE TO Everyone, make sure when you install the struts, the hose is NOT in the way. Such a simple mistake on my behalf cost me 2632 in parts and labor.

Glyn M Ruck - Thank you for your kind words, and for all of the suggestions. It hurts to know my simple screw up cost me so much money, but there's nothing much I can do at this point but to take it and learn. No sense in crying over spoiled milk.

Ok Glynn M Ruck, and Rules Laywer, update!

Got Sadie back today, and everything looks good and drives good so far. They replaced the gas tank, I can tell when i poured gas in, they only filled it half way...and under the gas cap there is some sort of marker paint on one side I guess for directional installation purposes. By taking a look at the picture in my previous post, anyone know what that hose goes too?

My KW V1's don't seem they have settled yet, regardless of them being on for a week. I hear sometimes it takes 2 weeks for springs to fully settle. I will post pics of her once everything is done. Thx guys...expensive learning lesson.

I'm not doubting its broken. Just dealers have tendency to repair things in the most expensive way possible.

Glad you're back up and running.

P0455 code on 2000 E430

If I am getting a P0455 code on my MB, has the car gone into Limp mode because of this fault? I have a cheap aftermarket gas cap I put on several days ago after loosing the original. This morning the car banged in reverse would not upshift to 3rd gear. I have to turn the ignition off to put the lever into park. The indicator for Drive is pixeled out. Can anyone offer assistance/advice?
