What motor oil to put? I am confused...
My car (C250) is running an OEM Mercedes-Benz oil but it is too expensive and I am thinking about switching to a cheaper alternative brand which is 229.5 approved.
I was considering Shell Helix Ultra because the price is good and it is said to be used in Ferrari (I guess it should be good then?). Is Shell Helix Ultra a good oil and which type should I go for 0w-40 or 5w-40? Which is better and is there a noticeable difference which I can sense?
Up here the Mobil 1 goes on sale frequently at my local Canadian Tire and I can get a 4L jug for about $38 CAD which is pretty cheap
If you live in Death Valley buy the 5w-40 or Wisconsin the 0w-40. Easy. Or just the cheapest or most accessible.
Thanks for the response about the Shell Helix Ultra. I am glad you are satisfied and I will go for it because the price is good. Probably the 5w-40 will be best for me.

This is a little worrying... is there a logical explanation?

5.5 litres seems correct. I question whether you have the correct dip stick. check with your dealer & compare.
i saw on one post about diesel!! If your car is on gas, it must be MB-Approved 229.5 (should be on the bottle).
If your car is on diesel, it should be MB-Approved 229.51!
For reference, my W204 CDI220 2008 i put Motul X-CLEAN+ 5W30 MB-Approved 229.51.
