P001685 - camshaft relative to crankshaft trouble code

Hello,
The engine has stopped in the middle of the road, while not working with more than 2000 RPM. After this the engine seems not to start anymore.
I have the following trouble code: P001685 The position of the intake camshaft cylinder 1 bank 1 is implausible relative to the position of the crankshaft. There is a signal above the permissible limit value.

The mechanics where I've went with the car said (without opening the engine) that the engine must be replaced. I dont believe this is true.

Car is C200 BlueTec, september 2015, 1598 cc, 160.000 kilometers and engine code R9M-A5-00

You have a bunch of codes there. How old is the vehicle battery?

Cam position sensors and crank position sensor. Replace these and report back. Cam pos are relatively cheap and easy to replace. Crank pos not too expensive but a bit of a pain to replace (rear of engine at transmission bell housing). All sensors can be done in a couple of hours if you are decently skilled.

The battery is the original from manufacturer. It doesn’t show any signs of ageing. I will consider replacing it.

The battery is past due for replacement. It’s 6 or 7 years old depending on when the car was assembled. Replace the battery and report back.

If the engine runs at all it is very unlikely that replacing the engine is needed. Even if it doesn’t that’s an extremely costly first option. Do the low cost things first then show results. Other members replying know this engine thoroughly.

I have replaced camshaft sensors and still get P0016 85 error stating “Position not plausible compared to crankshaft position"

I will be changing the crank position sensor and battery this week.
Can somebody help me with some parts number code for crank position sensor?

The engine does not run. It fails to start. I will proceed changing all sensors related to the matter and report back

What is your VIN?

Have you searched mbparts.mbusa.com or http://mbepc.net/#gsc.tab=0

The VIN doesn't list any parts on mbparts.mbusa.com. Italy car, correct?

mbepc doesn't have anything.

Buy WIS/ASRA/EPC from ebay and search using your VIN in EPC. Or call your local dealer and buy the part from them. It's not expensive, all things considered.

A couple of things turned up when I searched the VIN.

1-This model is listed as a W205 and we’re on the W204 forum (but Chassis is one of the most knowledgeable contacts on the site, so you’re okay there).
2-The 1.6 engine was new for your model year.

I checked your profile and it says Romania, I think. There is a country specific site at
www.Mercedes-Benz.ro. I believe there is a link on that site to in country service parts.

not a merc
Keep throwing parts at it! What do you think the fault code means? The camshaft turns in sync with the crank... now it doesn't hence the fault.. timing chain and bent valves. Tappet cover off and inspect

That certainly could be the case. But my W211 with M112 engine suddenly failed to start and displayed that code. Replacing the crank position sensor solved the problem.
