The SLK is a very nice car on the exterior, but sit inside and look at the dashboard material. Feels like rubber.
The new S, everybody who's seen it in person that I am very familiar with haven't been too inspired by its styling.
The cars in the current Mercedes lineup that I appreciate are:
C,
2007 E (don't like the instrument cluster),
2007 CLK (don't like the instrument cluster with the big clock and digital gauges),
the SL,
CL,
SLR,
and the G.
If they would change the instrument cluster on the E and the CLK, I'd be more impressed.

1, clock should always be towards the center of the car or centered on the instrument cluster.
2, tachometer should either be towards the center of the car or dead center of the instrument cluster.
3, Speedometer should always be on the towards the outside of the car UNLESS the tachometer is mounted in a central position, then it should be towards the center of the car.
4, minimal digital guages as possible.
Clarification about "the center of the car." On Left Hand Drive cars, the center of the car would be the "right" of the driver and instrument cluster, while on Right Hand Drive cars, the center of the car would be on the "left" of the driver and instrument cluster.
Very few cars live up to this requirement. This requirement is in place because when I look down from the road to see my instrument cluster, the first thing I want to see is the engine speed; since engine speed is the viewing priority.
Lastly, high-tech is not a strong point of Mercedes-Benz. Seriously, nobody needs "night vision" supercomputers on their cars.

BTW, the night vision is the yestertech piece of the loadout. Cadillac had that a decade ago...

It's funny that they test there were it's hot and humid. Then the bring it to our southwest where it's bone dry and 120F and parts start falling off and they can't figure out why. I had a W201 lemon law buyback because the throttle linkage would expand in the desert heat and fall off.

Good to see you again jimmyg. I'm surprised that Mercedes chose to conduct the hot weather testing in Dubai, since they usually do it in the Mojave desert in California (on a drive towards a high speed test track in Arizona).
Regarding the 2008 C Class, I'm interested, but I don't think I'll need one for a while, since I actually plan to drive this car past 100k miles. Besides, I'll try to see what's good on the market about 6 years from now and make my decision then.

DaimlerChrysler has been doing hot weather testing in Dubai for several years now, as has Ford's PAG (Jag, Aston, Landrover) and BMW. Here are some pics of other prototypes in Dubai:

Or could this be the new upcoming CLK? Unlike this, C-Class Sports Coupe looks more like a hatch...

That's a good question. Because the CLK, although it shares its chassis components with the C-Class, it gets some of its styling from the E Class (talk about a paradox).
Thus, it's difficult to determine when the CLKs will have their new model debut.
I think this is going to be the next CLK Class, since the C-coupe is expected to remain as a hatchback. The next C Class will look somewhat a bit like a miniature S-Class in some aspects.
