Losing oil very fast

Hi,

My '09 C350 is losing a quart of oil within 500 miles. No apparent leak. Car is well maintained. Exhaust smoke looks ok. Passes smog inspection without any issue. What could be the problem?

1Qt in 500Mi is a fair amount - Time for action

Lost oil is going somewhere... It may be:
  1. leaking on the floor
  2. mixing with the coolant
  3. inside the engine intake
  4. burned through cylinders
Time for a gloves on inspection under the bonnet.

No leak on the floor. No smoky exhaust (oil mixing with coolant). Will check spark plugs and take it to mechanic for compression test.

  2. Oil change every year or 5kMi ?
  3. How is the car power response: weak or strong?

MB 229.5
MB 229.5

The 2009 C350 recommended oil is not 5W-30.

Realize that after 2500.Mi this oil is much thinner than what the engine needs.
The old/hot W30 oil becomes a W20.
The old/hot W40 oil becomes a W30.

Consider switching to a better lubricant closer to MB stock Mobil1 5W-40 or better Motul 5W-40. This will help control oil consumption.

Consider though that 229.5 was created at a time when inferior oil spec existed. If you think you have a dirty valve train, Try using 5/30 Restore and Protect. It's cleaner than anything that would have been available when the specs were written for your car. I say this after using it in my 275k lx from 06 and can its a good oil. I do short 3-5k oci on that car as well and it's spotless. with zero consumption ever. That, or like Cali said, use something even heavier like motul fs 5/40 for a slower clean with regular intervals. Personally, a mild engine flush is also ok if all cautions are heeded, meaning if your engine is sludgey, you want to clean it slower...

I would suggest using a fully synthetic oil with a PAO/ESTER base, they are much superior to other base composition oils.

I have used R+P with no issues. Stopped an oil filter housing leak too. Our cars are old enough that their "back end of the bathtub curve" status warrants careful deviation from the original MB standards.

How are you checking and confirming it is indeed losing a quart of oil every 500 miles?

In my Operators manual it notes that the quantity of oil between the lower and upper marks on the dipstick is around 2qts.

You would measure how much you put in to get back to a given point...
