This is the noise I have like a tinny rattle for the first couple of minutes after a cold start. Similar? Dealer has applied a wastegate software update thinking it was that but it's made no difference.

Before it was an average of 25.x mpg with mixed traffic.

Engine is just as strong as before.
Sounds like you got lucky!

It's hard to tell from your video if that's the wrist pin issue or not. Doesn't sound good though either way. I'd take it back in and ask them to look into the wrist pin TSB.

I've asked them and they say it's C300 only affected by wrist pin issue. This sounds tinny though and rattly/inconsistent like a heat shield. Reminds me of tinny rattle I get in my bmws exhaust flap.

That is what they are doing for me. They attempted to rebuild it, new piston, and whatever, but compression was to low. MBUSA told the dealership to replace the motor completely. I am hoping to get my car back this week. it's been there for almost 30 days.

You got lucky I would have preferred a new motor - although I must say my rebuilt motor is running strong (minus the poor MPG).

Had mine rebuilt in Bay area also (RAB Motors). What tipped you off to the low compression? How much of hassle was it to get MBUSA to go for a new engine?

My mpg has gone up closer to previous fuel economy. This last fuel up I got around 24.6 mpg. I am crossing my finger and hope that mpg continue to improve and recover to previous number.

Mine seems to be up this week too (from 21.7 to 23.2 mpg). Maybe there's hope..

A rebuilt motor will need a break in period for the rings to seat properly. Efficiency should improve pretty quickly.

A replacement motor was probably spun up and tested on a dyno at the manufacturing plant and probably needs no additional time to seat the piston rings.

My car is at Mercedes Benz of San Jose. It really was no hassle, I never asked for an engine replacement. The tech Frank there has been keeping me informed. But, I am still without my car, he said something about one part breaking when they took the motor out, no one has the part local, so they order it, and that I should have the car by early next week.

already over 30 days without my car, I hope is fixed right.

Got mine rebuilt last Friday. One weird thing I found is the "from RESET" page/tab doesn't seem to be calculating the MPG. It has been 2.3 MPG for ~120miles (usually it's 2.3 when I start the car... not sure why). The "from start" tab seems to be working fine. The 120miles include the 80miles the dealership drove (for QC?) so I was thinking maybe they started the engine but idled there for a long time while they repaired/rebuilt it?

I will try it... but do you really think it'll resolve that issue? It seems more like a software bug to me... Even if it did idle a long time in the dealership, it should at least show sth like 15 mpg?

you would know if it idled a long time in the shop based on the time shown in the trip computer. does that look like your aprox. driving time or is it much longer?

I think I've driven about 1:00 for about 40 miles when the picture was taken. I've driven another 30mins for 20miles or so after that, but it's still at 2.3 mpg.

Mine did the same thing when I picked it up. Reset the miles and it corrected itself immediately. I have to say I freaked out when I first saw that.

Does anyone know definitively if this repair is going to show up on Carfax? I'm thinking about trading in and my concern is resale value taking a hit as a result of this. Thanks!

Just got my C300 back today (after 3 weeks) for the wrist pin issue. NOT HAPPY. I'm hearing a moderate whine at low RPM's and slight hesitation under moderate acceleration.

On the work order: "During the removal of cylinder head, extractor tool broke in left timing chain guide pin. Sent head to machine shop to remove broken tool without damage to cylinder head".

I'll drive it for a week or so to see if the issues work themselves out.

Feb 12 to date - car still in shop!!! - My service advisor stated they are waiting for the part from Germany, the part that broke when they removed the motor. A new motor is sitting in crate waiting to be installed. At this point I am very disappointed. I am going to contact the dealer and MBUSA for a replacement vehicle. I am really loosing faith in MB, and I have two of them.

You can bet your bottom dollar that the dealership you trade your vehicle in at will know about the engine being replaced...

IMO, Mercedes should be giving EVERYONE that has had their engine worked on or replaced because of this issue an extended warranty that's transferable free of charge.

Yeah, that's ridiculous! My car was in for 3 weeks you're working on 6 weeks at this point. If you're leasing, you should ask them to make your lease payment for this month as you're paying for a car you cannot use. If you bought the car, MBUSA should compensate you in some other way. This is total BS!

Well, I'm considering trading in on a 340i as I think I've had just about enough of MB at this point. I know I'll be upside down but I'm wondering if this "repair" will effect the resale value even further. If I'm too far in the hole I'll probably keep it until the lease is up. If I can get out of it relatively unscathed I will. Just curious what I'm up against.
