Can I negotiate price on an ordered car?
Clearly when buying a car off the lot the dealer has increased incentive to move it, but if I understand manufacturer / dealer relationship properly there should still be negotiating room on an order car as well.
Thanks
Just to give you a ball park figure of the deal I was able to negotiate, I got $7,405 (about 13%) off the sticker price of $56,135, and $3,000 more for my trade than Tulley BMW offered for my vehicle...which I'm allowed to drive until my new vehicle shows up. What I'm hoping for at this point is a low interest rate special in June when I take delivery.
- there is a 3% dealer hold back for the manufacturer to compensate the dealer for interest and expense whilst an auto was on their lot. For a new order, that expense does not exist -- so go for it.
- Also, you may qualify for a fleet discount -- some based on profession, some based on airline affinity programs, some based on insurance company ...
- then, there are some services on the internet that tell you average purchase price based on options you select
- I negotiated some of the add ons at either dealer cost or as a throw-in. There was no way I was paying $140 for floor mats (dealer through that in); dealer through in a third key (we tend to lose one every few years
); wheel locks at more $100 - no way.- wanted a different paint color -- paid the dealer cost rather than the list price.
The fleet and the 3% were thousands of dollars. The other small items represented a few hundred dollars -- but every little bit helps (and sets the tone).
Getting comparable prices from other dealers and friends and colleagues the purchased was the best way to knock real dollars off the cost.
