2018 C300 Sport Loud Engine

Hi All,

I recently purchased a CPO 2018 C300 Sport with only 5000 miles on it, and in general I love the car.

The one thing that was pointed out to me was that the engine sounds "relatively" loud for a new car. More specifically, when I start the engine in comfort mode and back it out of the garage, the complaint is it sounds "loud like an older car." Additionally, when I went shopping and noticed another person with a C300 drive by, it was definitely quieter than my vehicle.

My main questions are:
1) Is the C300 Sport louder than a C300?
2) Is this something I should insist the dealer look at? If so what would I ask them to look at specifically?

Thanks

I just came from a 2011 V6 W204 Sport with no Start/Stop function to a 2015 W205 Sport with all the things.

This is my first Mercedes Benz with Start/Stop feature and 4 Cylinders. (WHY only 4???) I ABSOLUTELY hate that loud 4 Cylinder engine noise on first start (Injectors??) TAK, TAK, TAK, TAK!!!

Sounds stupid as hell and makes me think I am driving a defective UPS truck. WTF Mercedes.

I simply switch to Sport Mode and drive off, windows rolled UP and try to forget.

This can't be progress. I want my expensive car to sound like a well tuned race car every time I start it. (Like my V6 W204 did)

I drive a UPS truck. These cars shouldn’t be that loud.

So you're saying the louder sound at startup is due to the Start/Stop feature?

No, from what I've read it has more to do with direct injection.

Did it bother you before it was pointed out to you? In general, they are noisy, but that is the nature of newer DI engines. The car should be well enough insulated that you don't notice in the car, if you can still hear it with windows up and vehicle driving normally, it may be a concern. If you only hear it backing out of your garage or with the windows down, they are all like that.

It didn’t really bother me with the windows up until it was pointed out. I was just wondering if it was normal and it sounds like it is.

Thanks!

it doesn't hurt to have it checked out if you are still concerned. My service guy doesn't charge me for minor checking.

Also, your car is CPO so I would assume it has already been checked and certified as OK.

THIS W205 is NOISY all around.
I had a Sport C250 W204. Comparing this C300 W205, the engine sounds like a DIESEL. The number of times people ask me if it is a DIESEL, pissed me off. This is the WORST MB that I have. My wife's 2003 C200 Kompressor sounds MUCH MUCH MUCH better. 2000 A Class, may sound tinny BUT it still sound BETTER, not like a truck DIESEL.
Beimester CRAP. Harmon Kardon was so much better. Cheap looking AFTER-THOUGHT audio display sticking out of the dashboard, like OLD post purchase ICE install. Telephone volume ALWAYS defaults to the LOUDEST. When a new music track is played, it will start with LOUD irregardless of the volume set, then it settles at the set volume. If the Auto Volume Level is turn off, then have to manually turn up when moving, to compensate for road roar and WIND BUFFETING on window.
W204 - NO Wind Buffeting on windows
FAKE exhaust
Reduced size under bonnet Insulation
CHEAP toyota is MUCH more quieter in-cabin
Materials have CHEAP feel and look, especially the rubber seals around doors, bonnet, boot.
Plastic surround feel CHEAP, does not sound solid. Mazda plastics sounds and feel better than this.
Carpet material is like those you can buy CHEAPLY from hardware stores.
Leather attracts dirt like magnets
Ambiance lighting, compared to GLA has only 3 colors, where the 2016 GLA has multi shades.
Doors close with a ka-clangk rather than an VW/AUDI THUD. Even a KIA closes with a klomph.
Water channeling is CRAP. Water retention on top side panel, in engine bay - will eventually get rusted out. Water flows down toward battery compartment on plastic cover. Water continues to drip down drain holes from doors internally leaving water marks on skirts - showing that window rubber sealing is not up to standard. Which will eventually rust the inside of doors.
Leafs and dirt are drawn towards engine bay via windscreen.
The whole car is not comparable to a car that you pay USD35k for. More like USD15k.
#GREEKUPS - put this car side by side to UPS truck for a blindfold test, would not be able to tell either one apart.
Additional peeve:
What is so futuristic about having transmission stick on the steering column? It is also very slow to respond from Reverse to Drive, vice-versa, when you are trying to do a three-point or trying to get out of the way.

Most DI engines sound like diesels so I can't blame MB. Even Toyota can't keep their new DI engines quiet. The days of the C class are numbered anyways and that is why Mercedes is trying to take it up market. For god sake the corolla had LED lights standard before the C300. Now Toyota and Honda have distronic like features standard on most models. The standard speakers on the W205 is worst than that of 15 year old corolla. At the end of the day, 60%+ of new MBs are leased so they could care less about what us owners think. The Accord Sport 2.0t is looking really good right now.
