Angry Check Engine Light On-Car in the Shop

Car had a rough start this morning. After dropping off my kids, I can't start the car with keyless go as it just keeps cranking. Finally, I was able to start using the key in ignition, that is when the Check Engine Light came on. It is now at Beschoff Motor. Waiting for their call to tell me what's going on. Car has 8,500 miles.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Well you did not give us much to work with
TRy to think what could have caused it.
Could be bad fuel issue...

The dealer should call back in couple hours. I'll wait and see what they have to said. Anyone else had similar issues?

I hope it's not something serious. Is yours among the first batch that roll off assembly line?

Initial report from the dealership is a bad crankshaft position sensor (CPS). They are sending a shuttle to bring me back to the dealership for a loaner car. I will get more details once I stop by the dealership for full briefing.

Dealer says the car should be ready to go by end of tomorrow. Thanks guys.

Oh yeah, I think my car is the first to roll off the assembly with Sep 27, 2006 production date and in service Dec 13, 2006.

Regarding Costco.....not going there anymore. Will stick to Shell from now on just in case.

Your mechanic is blowing smoke or telling you old wives tales regarding Costco fuels.

First and formost, purchase all fuel from new gas stations due to issues with sediment in the underground tanks and crap/water in the lines. The newer the better.

Costco is very aggresive on their fuel filtation filters by changing them out when due. Not like some gas stations that need to save $$ by using them past their useful life.

As far as the 91 rating, if it was less than 91, you and your beastly car would be the first to know that.

Crank Sensor

I have an '04 CLK500 with 38k and had the exact same problem. Last week, my car would not start -- it kept cranking. Finally after 10 min of trying, it started. Check Engine light then turned on and stayed on. I dropped it at the dealer and they said bad crank sensor. Part was like $130 and labor like $300 or something. $5 something all in?
Same thing -- car was on for 10 min then stopped at grocery store so it was warmed.

My searches showed that it's esp a prob if car is warm. No idea. Can't believe so many people have this problem. WTF. Find a new crank sensor supplier!!

Isn't water costs more than gasoline in kuwait? j/k

Thanks for the information m_berman. This makes me feel better because I have been using Costco gas from day 1. My mechanic didn't say anything to me, so I think you are referring to mbenz1's mechanic.

Since we are on the subject of gasoline, which brand do you guys use? Any noticeable differences between Costo, Shell, Chevron, 76 and Valero?

Here in CA the 91 octane is at gas stations. In other parts of the US they use 93 octane instead of 91. I believe the differences are due to regional air quality issues.

The higher the octane the better engine performance. At speciality gas stations they have available 100 and 110 octance gas. I have used 100 in my CLS 55 and it feels like it is a CLS 65!

It's a matter of time until somehow you get water into your gas due to some gas station's underground storage tank leaks. When it happens, you need to visit the dealer to have the fuel system cleaned and fuel filter replaced. It can damage fuel injectors and sensing devices. If that happens, return to the offending gas station and demand restution of the $$ spent at the dealer for repairs. In Kwait, you're on your own.

What really sucks now is that the differential between regular and premium is from 20 -30cents. I have a friend that owned a gas station years ago when the prices werent that far apart that would sell reg as premium. I can just imagine the crap thats going on now.
I dont think the states have anyone that goes around to check?

If you can't afford the cost of at least 91 octane at $5 or $6 per gal/ do yourself a favor and sell the MB and get a Ford Focus.

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
Costco

gas was not the problem it is true 91.Cps sensor and a code was very easy for them to check and the p**** code showed cps failed and they repaired it.
You will be good to go.Failed cps can't show proper crank speed and that is what tells the ecu when to fire the spark. That and the cam position sensor
Which with any luck won't fail for a long time
