CLS 55 AMG POWER LOSS
Hi i have a 2005 cls 55 amg
after it warms up and i drive it a little hard the s/c cuts out and then sometimes comes back on when i drive slow for a while
i've pluged it in and it comes up with coolant pump, charge-air cooler
error detected.....i have changed the pump and the same happens so i take it it's not that
any ideas ?....
thanks chris

Where are you located?
Which did you replace it with? Where did you get it installed at?
If you replaced it with an OEM one, it is not unheard of to get a bad pump right out of the box.

i rebuilt the one that was in it, and then still bought a brand new one from merc ...and still had the problem with both of them ...but they are running still when the s/c cuts out

Might be a dumb question, but have you checked your coolant levels? Where are you located? Maybe I can give you a suggestion to where you could take your CLS

Was the system bled?

theres really only two things that control that supercharger, the secondary coolant circulation pump ( wich is inline with the only coolant system and should be on the passenger side near the front bumper area, not like the 65s that have a seperate cooling system for the innercoolers) and possibly a bad intake air temp sensor or if you were in the area maybe disconnected. if it sees the intake temp too high it will shut off the supercharger sometimes too

i have looked at the outside temp ...and it's showing -40 i know i'm in london but it's that cold ....is that what would happen if it has become disconnected ?...any idea where it is ?....
Thanks chris

is the intake air temp sensor the same as the outside temp sensor ?....i've just seen the outside temp sensor has come lose and been ripped off ...off to go get a new one now ...
#15
thats the outside temp sensor that should be in the front bumper it will read -40 when its disconnected or an open in the wiring, the intake temp sensor should be right before the throttle body. sholuld be a lil sensor with two wires. i havnt seen a outside temp sensor cause a supercharger not to come on. but it is possible. on the new c class w204 body if that is disconnect it will set a check engine light that outside temp doesnt correspond to intake air temp codes.

thanks for your help on this i'm pulling my hair out...i've been out in it tonight and it cuts in and out all the time ...soon as i floor it for a minute it cuts the s/c then drive slow and it comes back on...can i plug in and read that temp sensor ...or should i just get a new one ?.....thanks chris

wich pump did you replace. where was it located on the vehicle. i would def get a new outside temp sensor. but i would def take a second look at the secondary coolant circulation pump

the pump is on the right behind the bumper i took mine apart and replaced the carbon brushes....and then even bought a brand new one from mb £230...both were running when the s/c cuts out....i have stopped the car and jumped under it to check the pump is running ....which sensor should i get?...i have to replace the outside temp one in the bummper anyway cause it's gone lol....but should i get the one on the throttle body?...thanks Chris

This sounds like an IC pump issue.
When I replaced mine, I did the IC pump relay along with it. It is located behind the passenger seat, inside the box.
Did you bleed the system after the install?
When all else fails, bring it to the dealer!

def start with the known bad wich is the outside temp sensor. im not saying its impossible but i have seen crazier things. start with the missing outside temp sensor and report your findings

i'm now waiting for the outside temp sensor and the coolant pump relay both here for monday ....how should the system be bled ?...i think theres a procejure but don't know it ?...thanks
#22
if the pump is turning on the relay is probably doing its job. but its good to replace just because whenever you do a pump. typicly to bleed the system just fill it up. warm it up and add coolant as it sucks it down. usually they dont get air pockets in the sytem. turn on your heater too. drive it and check it and top it off. the only the 65s have a seperate cooling system for the innercoolers that need to be bled with a special set up that pump the coolant through the system and pushes the air out at the same time

ok i'm going to get the relay moday along with the outside air temp sensor and going on what you say there's no air in the system ...i'll put both those on and report back ...have a good weekend ..

It works ....I changed both today and it works it was the outside air temp sensor believe it or not they must run the ecu from that one and not the block temp ?...wierd but true..happy to have my power back i need some new back tyres now.......thanks all
