will 255/40/17 fit in rear?

I ran across a nice set of winter tires for cheap. The fronts are 225/45/17 and the rears are 255/40/17. I know the fronts will fit but not sure if the rears will fit. I have a 02 C32 stock, these are going on the stock rims.

I don't think the size would be a problem but you won't get the best traction from a wider snow tire. My snow tires are 225's all around and I still think it sucks

They should fit. The rule of thumb given to me was .5 inches over or under is not going to cause a problem. It's slightly different (front instead of rear), but for what it's worth, previous owner on my car had 245s all the way around and it always drove fine.

Should be fine according to:

http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html

The increase in rolling radius will be a little over 1%, and the tyre size you describe is fine for wheels between 8.5 and 10 inches.

However as has been pointed out, wider tyres will perform less well than narrower tyres in the snow.

Hope this helps.

Not sure about the differece between the W202 and w203 C-class clearance, but mine rubbed when I mounted them. I went from the same 245/40 on a 8.5 rim to a 255/40/17. My car is lowered as well. I had to have the lips that werent' rolled on the wheel well ground back about 5-8mm and resprayed.

Go here for a tire size calculator/comparator:

http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

Looks like overall diamter will increase by 3/10". The tires should be fine.

I ran them on my C32 with no issues on the track, so they should not rub EVER on the street.

However, everyone here is correct that they will be LOUSY in the snow, aka you want as SMALL as tread as possible for snow, NOT wide.

Good luck

Shouldn't rub till you get out to a 265. Even a 265 will work if you roll your fenders. I'm lowered with 255/40/18 and have never rubbed. And just for gee-whiz, 235s in the front were fine for me until I lowered the car. Then it rubbed...big time. Ended up tweaking the inner wheel well a bit to make it work. Stick with 225 or less (which winter tires should be anyway) in the front and save yourself the pain....
