I'm planning on heading down to Phoenix this weekend to drop my SLK32 off to have custom headers made. Once made, they will be easy to duplicate by the show where I get them made. Should take a couple of weeks. Planning on shorties because of California visual inspection.

I have been fllowing your progress on this project and it sounds promising. Please add me to your interested list. I'm with SilverBullet AMG and have to consider price.

I don't get it, they will look at the engine and see headers regardless. It doesn't matter if they are shorties or not. Just keep your OEM manifolds and swap them out when the time comes. Are you dropping your off at Floored Fabrication?

Forget that. Once they are installed on my car, they’ll stay in place. There are dozens of (mainstream) aftermarket headers that have earned a waiver for emissions compliance (at considerable expense) to their manufactures. I’m looking for a few additional pound-feet whenever the need might arise. On my other vehicles, I’ve installed CARB approved (exemption granted) parts to help increase their performance, with favorable results.

From the perspective of our regulatory authorities, any exhaust manifold merely directs the flow of spent gases towards the downstream OE catalytic converters. I keep the cats in place as they have a favorable effect on the HC, CO & NOx that comes out of the tailpipe and because I have to breath that crap too. When I’m required to submit to CA’s bi-annual visual and exhaust spectrometer inspection for registration renewal, I’ll pass easily and with a clear conscience.

Some inspections are more thorough than others. Normally they just confirm that you have cats installed and the engine is not showing a code. The cats are CARB approved so I am not worried about the car passing the emissions test. Yes, I'm getting them done at Floored Fabrication.

This is my first car (that needs smog) so I am just a little concerned about not having a CARB exempt number which is why I was suggesting to hold onto the OEM manifolds.

I can't wait to see them. I was going to drop off my car this weekend but you beat me to them. I'm going to be bringing my car down to them too see if the SLK32 headers will fit the SRT-6 . If they do great, I'll only have to wait a week. If they don't fit my car will be with them for a couple weeks getting fitted. Keep us posted on the progress if you don't mind.

No problem. I definitely plan to keep the stock parts, just in case.

I would think they would fit the SRT-6. We will be have both short and long tube headers made so you'll have a choice. Long tube will definitely requiring ECU tuning. I'll keep you posted. The job also include larger intercooler and IC cooling system and a rear diff so it will likely take 4 to 6 weeks but I'll keep you posted.

Sweet! Are they going to perform some dyno tests with both styles of headers? I am curious as to how much power the headers will make then how much more the ECU tune will bring to the table. Just out of curiosity what are your intercooler plans?

I going to have dyno of the before and after for the short style because that is what I am putting on my car. However, it will including the cooling change. 430 is looking at having long tube header created if there is room and we'll use my car for fitment but not for dyno because the long tube will definitely require ECU tuning.

On cooling, nothing too ground breaking. Just separate the engine cooling with the I/C cooling, new reservoir tank, larger I/C, Johnson CM30 pump similar to what others have done here. Thought about putting a much larger reservoir in trunk with 2 pumps but that would double the cost so I opted not to.

Gotcha.

I was thinking about a similar setup myself. I've seen people move the battery in the trunk and put a larger reservior in its place but I didn't like that idea. On the Crossfire there are large styrofoam pieces in the trunk that can be removed. With them removed there is a generous home for a water tank that would fit nicely under the factory trunk mat.

I will be doing pre and post dyno runs. I am expecting to need an ECU tune to add additional fuel after the install.

I dyno'd 298hp stock. Since that time I have done some exhaust work, added a Johnson CM90 pump, and a very large secondary heat exchanger adding ~1 gallon of coolant, last but not least I have installed the ASP pulley's. There may be additional mods by the time the headers are built.

Steve has very generously offered his car for use to build the headers.

My apologies to 1FastC32. I certainly didn't mean to jack the thread. You can follow additional developments on the headers for the SLK32 here:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r170...nterested.html

I really enjoy this forum. Great technical info available from many experienced tuners and very little trash.

Bump for an update on 1FastC32's header project...

Was reading a current copy of excellence the other day, and saw an ad for Boxster SS headers - the picture looked fairly similiar to C32 shorty headers I've seen (i.e. Supersprint's SS headers), and I was surprised to see the price was roughly $600, for full shorty 304 SS headers. Porsche aftermarket tuning parts are notorious for being expensive, just like Mercedes... why do Mercedes 6 cyl SS headers cost 3x or more than Boxster SS headers? I don't get that...?

Something that fits my srt-6? wow I am in... put me on the list

kinda of have thoughts that headers fitting the slk32 might not fit on the crossfire , but i am not qualified to make this statement...

wish you were just a tad closer to me I would love to donate my car for this kind of work...

just to answer everyone's questions...

the cost "should" be under $1000...that is what i am trying to keep it at right now, please don't hold me to this, as i am still waiting on pricing for a couple of peices...

design will be unveiled when the prototype is done, i know you guys are anxious, but trust me, it will be worth the wait...these will be direct bolt-on headers...

ETA is next week, provided all the supplies come in when they are supposed to...

FYI - I have been informed that long tube headers will not fit on the SLK32. The steering box is in the way on the passenger side.
