Lightbulb Header Project...

well, i have decided to create a set of headers for the 3.2L engine...they will be applicable to any late model mercedes with the 3.2L engine.

but as for now, i am going to create one set, this is just my personal quest to see if i can create a quality set of headers for the car that are made of stainless steel... if all goes well and the gains are sufficient, then i will have them mass produced and market them through one of the vendors here on the forum

i have a stock set of C32 headers on the way that i am going to measure, take pictures of them, and then cut them up and use the flanges...

i will keep you guys posted on the progress...i have contact with a couple of fabricators here in houston that say they can do the work, so after i do some consulting with them, i will pick the one i think can design the kind of header that i am looking for and we will see what happens...

right now i am thinking possibly an equal length shorty header or a long tube header made out of stainless steel...

pictures will follow as soon as i get the headers in...thanks for your donation Jerry!

Good luck with your project. I have always respected a man who can create functional art from stainless.

I’d be pleased to be a crash test installation dummy (at full retail) with your second set of prototypes.

i would need to get a stock set of 55 headers, but those would probably not be too hard to locate with all of the different offerings for the 55...

you should do a full header that doesn't re-use the stock cats.

Yeah it would be nice to be able to pick up a set of headers for the car for what most other companies charge e.g. DC, Hooker, etc. They charge what 500 bucks for ceramic coated??? The renntech and other prices are a joke. Even Porsche headers for a turbo no less are not even that much.

$500 is just not feasible with a "custom" low production run like the C32 or C55 though...if you take into account the amount of vehicles produced, and then the percentage of owners that are actually willing to mod their vehicles at this level, then it drives up the cost because you cannot produce enough to offset the R&D costs...

i will let you know what kind of costs i am looking at though, just like i did with the intercooler reservoir...

Well I know 500 seems like too little but it's really not that hard to do once you make a jig. You Copy out the OG ones then work with the fitment parameters to see what you can do e.g. shorty v. equal length and collector design. Then you got your proto done. Then you make a jig so you can copy them out in a few hours- The real R&D really isn't more than a couple of days for a competent race car fabricator.

Once small point of clarification. The headers will not fit the SLK32 - they will bolt up to the engine but there are other clearence issues with the smaller engine bay.

Now if you could find a SLK32 for fitment there would be a lot of interest between the SLK & Crossfire boys & girls.

I was planning on doing headers for the SLK32 in September, likely shorties as I live in CA and am worried about the CA visual emissions inspection.

ok, just to update you on cost, i contacted Jet Hot coating to get an estimate on what it would cost to get the headers coated...the estimate came back to around $300 shipped for a set of headers...could be more depending on if i end up creating a long-tube set or not, as this was just for a set of shorty V6 headers...just fyi

Some interesting technical information to glean from www.burnsstainless.com

I have always been a huge fan of Swaintech coatings. Doesn't have the bling bling of jet hot coatings but I believe it does a better job retaining the heat.

Just to let you know Erick, I was charged $125 to jetcoat my
6-to-1 log turbo manifold. I assume this shop is in FL?

if only I can come accross a set of 02 Simulators and a stock
set of headers, I'd tackle this project.

I'd use the stock headers, having them jet coated, and then
a custom Y pipe with 2 or 3 Magna Flow Resonators and 2.5"
piping.

You do NOT need o2 sensor simulators for these cars! I already checked it out. All you need are o2 sensor spacers. I got mine from Road Race Engineering. They just space the o2 sensors further away from the exhaust flow, and that is enough to alter the sensor readings.

If you don't want that, Kleeman can disable the primary cat check.

I ended up leaving the stock primary cats on. I could not bear the exhaust tone with all four cats removed. It sounded awful. I left the secondaries off.

I recall the PM you sent me about it, I didn't understood how
that worked and I sent those guys a inquiry and never heard
back.

Sounds like I might as well get a pair of these spacers and
a stock set of headers to tackle on this project...

Anyone doesn't want their stock C32 headers?
