Smart Cars
Hey guys, considering one of these for ****s and grins?? Can it be modded and what do you all think of them??? I've driven one, slow as snot off a baby's face in February and not that great on gas either. Sorta cool and the technology is all Benz. Be nice as a pit car or something to that effect.

My next door neighbor traded his Mini Cooper S for one of these Clown cars. My kids laugh every time he drives home, as they remark that he is the tallest guy in the neighborhood driving the smallest car, and is what amounts to an enclosed golf cart. I'd guess his gas mileage is not all that much greater than his Mini was. Because they are so short on power, you need to put your foot in the pedal a bit more than ususal to climb a hill or enter the freeway. More foot=more gas. He loves the attention though.
If you are an "attention *****", you will enjoy it for a few more months, before the novelty wears off.
By the way, since these "cars" do not employ crumple zones, they are built like brick sh*t houses. I've heard that they tend to really bounce off the objects they hit in the crash tests. That does not sound like a comfortable way to end a crash.

If I end up getting a job up here after school, I'd seriously consider one. Parking in Berkeley is god-awful and most of my commute is city anyways. 4 stars in the euro NCAP is probably 2 more than my old 300E would get, so it technically would be an upgrade in safety.
Plus 35mpg city is about 3x what I get in my C32 now...

why not just buy a used civic for $6-8k as your daily beater. My old civic use to get 31-35mpg consistently.
I dont see the purpose of buying a $12-16k car with the maintence cost of a mercedes. It only gets around 5mpg more, but you lose the ability to carry four people and a trunk.
Other then the novelty of the car and its different, there's no real benefit to the car. If they brought over there diesel version then it would be a different story.

When I see Smart Cars on the streets here in Houston, I just laugh. I call them "Soccer ***** for trucks". We have about 50% trucks and SUV's on the road here, and I'd hate to be in a Smart Car when a soccer mom driving a Suburban or Expedition plows into me, sending me bouncing across the freeway like a goal shot!
Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't be caught dead driving one of those little go-karts. My mother has a Prius, and I'm even embarassed to be seen riding in it when I visit her, and it's huge compared to a Smart Car. I admire the technology behind it, but I don't care to participate in the rhetoric behind the need for them.
Call me crazy, but I'm willing to shell out the cash to drive something fast and fun, regardless of whether or not it gets good mileage. I'm hoping someday our country (USA) will wake up and get over this ridiculous "green" trap we've fallen into, and go back to enjoying the great automobiles we manufacture nowadays, and quit worrying about driving these little turds-on-wheels that may save a few pennies at the pump, but have the enjoyment factor of a root canal. We're not Europe, nor do we want to be!
As for trying to mod a Smart Car, well, doesn't that defeat the whole purpose behind them? Or would you just be buying it because of it's great styling...?
Just my opinion, which is worth only what you paid for it...
