C32 with blown motor...what's it worth?

so i've got an '02 Silver C32 with about 76k miles on it..the motor popped, and it looks like it's gonna cost a little more than i can afford to fix it. If i sell the car as-is what kind of money should it bring?

i have some friends who want to do an LS1 swap, haha, but i don't know anything about it with a Benz, has anyone done that?

Wow, sorry to hear it. Can you be a little more specific about the diagnosis on the engine? What does it mean that it "popped"?

i agree, describe the damage. Given its a auto, i doubt you would've done any major damage, unless you decided to drive your car without any oil in or something.

I would recommend against doing a LS swap in this car. C32 isn't a miata or civic, a lot of the stock electrics are tied to the ecu.

I have no doubt you can probably get ls engine working in the car, but unless you dont enjoy having air bags, abs, bas, power seats, head lights. I would keeping the stock engine and ecu.

nah with a mercedes its different. A lot of the electrics are tied to getting signals back from the stock ecu.

For example in the c32 seat control modules, it's the ecu that tells the seat control module to stop draining power after 15min when the cars off.
If it doesn't get that signal, it'll keep draining power over night.

The cars more digital then electrical, hence the expensive repair costs.

I'm not saying its not possible, but its a lot more complicated then your typical ford or honda.

Those crazy germans like to over engineer things.

one for daily driving and comfort...other for track days. I have a fd too..lol.jk. I'm a fan of turbo rotaries, but not a fan of maintaining rotaries.

i am all for an engine swap- i did a bored/stroked/injected/nitrous LT1 in my 1989 s10 drag truck. however- engine swaps on new(er) cars is much more complicated than on older cars. especially on an higher end import....and even more complicated when trying to swap in a different brand engine.

that swap would cost more than repairing your current engine or replacing your current engine with that used engine.

I didnt know the OP had a FD as well.
Usually between he two cars, the FD usually has a popped motor

I just had mine tuned by Steve Kan this weekend

Part the car....not worth the motor swap (for a different engine anyway). The ecu is extremely difficult and very sensitive.

Not worth the time...

not sure on the specifics of the car, i know there are metal chunks in the oil and filter and it made a terrible metal against metal sound when i tried to crank it over.

i know my best bang for the buck would be to part it out, but honestly this car has been a pain to work on and i don't think i have the time or space to do it.
i've gotten a lot of responses locally and even from this forum of people interested in the car....most for doing an LSx swap, damn car nuts...but quite a few who are interested in buying it. the problem is, i don't know what to tell them i'm looking to get out of it.
my current FD project cost me $4800 just for a 'decent' rolling chassis, so i'd like to think this could bring at least $5k if not more.

unfortunately i've spent most of my money on the FD so i'm really short on cash, kinda looking to cut my losses and run.

Find a used motor and put it in
Remember the Crossfire and SLK use the same motor

To attempt a rebuild would be cost prohibitive as they can cost +5k

unlike a stock rebuild on a 13B can cost anywhere from $ 1800 to $3000.

Merc power
Get an crossfire motor and swap it would be the best bet. Is your car full interior? with all options? if so, it should sell for more than 5k. If your car is will equipped with NAvi -heatseats-bixeon- etc.... you should get maybe 10k for the car as is

This is the first catastrophic engine failure I've heard of on a C32.

SLK55 AMG, E320 BlueTec, ML350, (formerly) C32 AMG, MR2 Turbo, HD-FLH-FSE, BMW R100RS, Ducati M900
Popped

I also recommend the Crossfire SRT-6 engine as it is the same unit and was also made by AMG for Chrysler. Can also look for wrecked SLK32 or C32 but those will be harder to source (I think).

Any AMG Thats Around..
if you put a different motor in there other than another C32 motor the electronics will be an issue....

the EIS,ECU,SRS systems to name a few all VIN Coded to the car... So if you put in... lets say a E55 motor in there, you will have to either reflash the E55 ECU to the vin of everything else (your car)... otherwise you got nada...

some trannys are different.... theres alotts stuff....

Where are you located? i could rebuild the engine for you.... or maybe there isint that much wrong with yours... or i could put in another one.....

I'd pull the motor, disassemble it, and find out what's wrong. Horrific noises while cranking can be anything – but it doesn’t have to lead to a complete rebuild. Assuming you've spun a bearing, turn the crank, get a set of crank bearings, rod bearings, rings, and oil pump (I wouldn't go cheap and skip the pump, but the oil cooler can be flushed at a machine shop). Disassemble the heads, clean, new cam bearings, timing chains, guides, and reassemble. In a worst case scenario, you’ll find the crank is scored beyond repair, and the valvetrain has had enough sand to ruin both cams, the rockers, and lifters. At that point, you could part out the block, rods, used pistons and bare heads, buy a used long block and be back in business (or reassemble the existing block and sell). If you can pull, disassemble, mic and reassemble a REW, rebuilding a vee six really isn’t that tough. In a best case scenario, you'll find the repairs to be minor. A lot of things can make a grinding noise while cranking.

Make mine the 2nd one you may have heard...

...or we'll see.

I've lost compression on my #4 cylinder.

Car is in at RBM in Atlanta right now and they're popping the head off tomorrow to dig down in to see what's wrong.

Minimum $2K.

Add that to the $3200 spent 3 weeks ago (alternator, SC pulley/bearings)...

And this car is starting to remind me of my '93 R1 that kept blowing seals (two engines...).
