damage claim, DAMN VALETS!!!!!
saturday, i went to our little sf bay area meet.
saturday night i went to dinner at bobs steak and chop at the omni hotel in sf.
i was goging back and forth between parking on the street and having to worry about someone breaking in or valeting.
i chose to valet.
i come out from dinner and hand over the ticket to the valet. he says it will take 10-15minutes, they are backed up.
10 mintues later, im staring at my rims with a couple other hotel employees and the valet. both passenger side wheels, theres white powder, there some rim rash and even chunks of white and black "stuff" stuck in the rim.
its obvious the damage is new. the car was spotless, so this obvious damage wouldve been spotted right away by a valet.
FORUTANTELY the valet agrees. he wasnt the one who pulled the car from the lot, just drove from the lot to the hotel door. he goes off to get some paperwork which we fill out. we take some pictures and decide no use crying over spilled milk.
the next day i contact the manager of the parking lot. he said the claims process is blaballaba this way. i insist i meet him and for him to see the damage so he himself can be a witness to it. i show him the car is STILL spotless and any halfway decent valet wouldve seen that damage and note it the ticket before handing it to me. he asked when i told the valet of the damage before or after leaving the hotel. i told him the valet didnt even give me the keys before he himself mentioned it. the manager seemed like a good enough guy. he told me a claims adjuster will be in contact with me soon.
i got a letter stating they would like an estimate for the damages.
this is my question.
so theres a bit of rim rash. three to four inches long and fairly superficial. nothing too crazy. no broken chunks of rim or anything. however, of course, i want this fixed the right way.
i am NOT going to ask for two new rims as i am not the type to try to f over someone because i can. i honestly think those refacing jobs should be plenty fine.
however, from an accident i had years ago where a lady rammed into my driver front fender, i realized "hidden damages" can pop up later. in that case, my wheel bearing seized no more than a month after i got my settlement check.
what i intend to ask for is this. refacing of the rim. new clear coat. tire removal and rebalance and mount and a four wheel alignment.
should i be looking or asking a shop to look at anything more?
SHOULD i be asking for new rims?

Personally I would just send them out for re-finishing...I would doubt any other issues with the car as they were probably parking close to the curb and rashed it on you
It was about 140 per wheel when I had mine done, and they looked flawless..

I was at that meet and for sure everyone's car looked as if they were totally detailed.
There is a shop down here in San Jose called Wheel Techniques and charge about $170 - $190 per wheel.
The owner is kinda a**h**le . I had a slight dent on my 19s. But, they do good work. I thought it was the only place to have our precious rims repaired until this...

I've not tried them, but, it's an option. let us know if.
I now have some slight dents on both my front rims but I'm not motivated to spend tha moolah for both rims at close to $400.

Id have them replace the wheels.

It is more than fair to have them pay for the alignment, balance, refinish, etc. Get a direct line for the claims office and you should be able to handle most of the billing over the phone and have the final repair bill sent direct to the adjudicator. That's best case of course. If you have to send the paperwork through the mail and fight it that way, don't expect to see anything for a month+. Sounds like this should be pretty straight forward since they aren't denying the damage at least.
Good luck!
i had a denali a couple of years ago and valet parked it overnight when i stayed at omni hotel..(weird coincidence??) It came back in the morning with no tv's, there where six custom installed in the car, all of my luggage in the back was gone, half a tank of gas gone... and to top it off THEY DID NOT COVER ANYTHING!!! they said that the back of the ticket says that they are not responsible for any damages!!
hope it goes over better for you!!! good luck

Can you say "Comp" claim??? Thank goodness for your own insurance!!
Why give your keys to a perfect stranger so that you don't have to walk a few minutes?
I guess I've never gone to a place where it was required to valet park.
