C55 Intake Shootout, RENNtech VS E55 airbox DYNO!

So today I skipped out of work early and headed over to Dyno Comp to talk about some secret projects I got in the mix. I noticed they had 2 E55 airboxes sitting around so after talking with Rich the owner he let me do a comparison test between the two Airboxes We grabed a set of new K&N's and slaped them in the E55 intake and after some fiddling we put the E55 intake on my C55 and removed the Renntech intake i had on. Both Intake boxes had K&N's (my renntech box has then already in and were cleaned 2 weeks ago) E55's K&N's were new. Here are the numbers for a Back to Back Dyno on a Dyno Dynamics dyno.

E55 intake on my C55 made 338whp
RENNtech intake on my C55 made 348whp

I think this is the first test of this kind by anyone, Pitting the RENNtech airbox VS the E55 intake. Its was very clear that the E55 intake on a C55 just does not make the power that the C55 RENNtech airbox makes.
BTW I still have the E55 intake that can be used for a C55 with clips modded to fit the C55 if anyone is interested im asking $200. Doubt I will get any takers after this test.

Is the E55 intake the same as the SL55 intake? Might be interested if so.

Just after I purchased the E55 ones....
So you're saying they barely make any power??

Does the E55 airbox make any more power over stock IDK? But 10hp more is kind of a big deal when you are talking intakes.

I don't know what to say..
So other than the dyno what basically is the difference between the two? Do the Renntech ones retain the stock air inlet tubes or does it have bigger ones that might account for this difference? Did you test the E55 ones after the run with the Rentech airbox and your temp was higher which accounted for the lower dyno results perhaps??

We ran the E55 intake first and we ran a few pulls we had two very consistent runs at 338whp then we took of the E55 intake and slapped on my Renntech all of this intake swap took about 1 min. started it back up and ran the Renntech box until we got two consistent pulls. I was pulling for the E55 airbox to win as I was taking it home anyway and it would have been nice to get some more power. It just wasnt the case. The renntech intake is taller then stock and is non restrictive. This test really answered questions i had about the renntech box. I wish I had the torque chart but if i recall the Renntech airbox made 15 more torque over the E55 intake.

I would like to see what they both look like side by side so I could see what might account for this. Unfortunately mine is not going on for another few months as I park my car for the winter. I'll do a before and after dyno when I put them on. I'll reserve judgment until then I guess......

I would deff do that. Run both with good filters like green or k&n. I hate to give anyone bad news, but i was thinking there were flaws in the Renntech design. I totally thought the E55 intake would make more power as it just looks like a better design. I would say this though... I bet the E55 airbox lets the motor cool faster.

Here are some comparison pics of the stock and Renntech aribox installed in my car. The Renntech box uses the stock intake tubes. Basically, the Renntech airbox removes all of the interior "folds/flaps" that are in the stock airbox, and it holds a higher volume of air inside (taller than the stock airbox):

Couldnt you just remove the baffles from the e55 intake and get closer in power? Does anybody have any pics of the inside of a e55 intake?

the M113K intake and the M113 intake air volume aren't that much different. on the NA gain is minimal. We're not talking about the M113K intake vs say the Renntech intake for M112 which then the volume is comparable which you don't have to spent big money for the RENNtech box.

good test never the less. however new filter and older filter makes a difference as well.

C55 Test: E55 Intake vs RennTech Intake

Very nice post.... It's nice to see factual numbers by independent testers for a change. I too have had good success with the RennTech air boxes on the CL500. By the way, do you have the SL55 splitter as well or stock one?

When we put the E55 airbox on it looks awesome. it fit to the stock mount although it took some twisting of the Yspliter to get it to fit along with trimming some clips. I think this little test shows that It is what it is. I hoped the E55 airbox made power. I wish I could have came here and showed some results proving it makes as much power as Renntech's airbox. On "my car" on this day the Renntech airbox was able to make more power than the E55 retro-fit intake. Maybe on the C55 the Renntech airbox just takes to mods better than the E55 airbox.

I know its a crappy picture so when i get in the office on Monday I will scan it in for a hi-res pic. If you look at the blurry pic you can see the A/F ratio. You can kinda make out that the Renntech box was able to pull more air than the E55 intake. With the E55 airbox on we were running a bit rich and the Renntech airbox fixed that by leaning it out to a good area. With My ECU tune there is no more to be had by tweaking it. I am totally maxed out.
