Heat Wrapping Our Intake Box...
So I was reading this thread on the E55 board
https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...-pictures.html
And it got me thinking... Our(C55) air box sits right on top of the engine block. I can feel there is noticeable power loss due to heat soak when I get out and drive harder for an extended period of time or whenever it gets in the 90s and 100s.
Has anyone taken off their air box and wrapped/lined the bottom with some sort of insulation(or whatever you call it) to keep the heat from going straight into the bottom of the air box?
(ps our search sucks so sorry if this has been answed before)

not yet. i will be doing it soon (next month or so). i'm gonna wrap the intake pipes and the air boxes. i just wanted to wait to get my data logger so i can determine the difference the heat wrapping did on the IATs

That would be nice! I just think there has to be some product at say Home Depot that you can buy for cheap that will work really well. Nothing really fancy, but even a small barrier between the bottom of the intake box and the engine has to produce sizeable results.

did it on my 32 box and works
DEI sells the heat insulation cloth or you can search for Thermo-tec which is what i used back then.
my friend also did his M112 airbox which underlines the entire box. he used velcro and because the thermo cloth works very well the velcro doesn't come off at all.

I just drive faster-I find it lowers my IAT by 2-3 deg when I break 100
I still say its not about insulating-but getting the heat out (CF hood, hood vents, ect)-I can see more of a beni from that....

While I haven't insulated the actual airbox I'm currently using the CLK350 airtubes which are a different material than the stock ones and larger also:

all that would help though for sure. and i've removed all my weather stripping / rubber engine bay lining to maximize air flow in and out.

so he attached the thermocloth to the airboxes with velcro strips? and they were able to remain fasted on there with the heat?
haha......Frank and I are all for a CF vented hood. he suggested it in a thread in the W203 section and i posted a pic and supported it, and then some newb tried to flame me by calling it rice.

this is what we used http://www.thermotec.com/aluminized-heat-barrier.html

I went when he decide to velcro it, but it has never failed on him. the thermo-tec cloth works incredibly. the cloth can withstand 2000deg F.

hmm, how do you think that thermotec stuff in that link would compare to the stuff posted in this thread already here: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TH...5/?image=large
huge price difference, but it looks like both are aluminized with weaved silica.

The only way a vented hood is going to work is if you cut the insulation under the hood or remove it completely!!
It's all about give and take... though this would work on getting the heat out, one would wonder if the direct heat on the underside of the hood from removing the entire underhood insulation will do anything to the paint on top of the hood.

It's an exact fit on both ends. The only thing is it's a tad short and I had to use some hose clamps. I did multiple dynos with these and the Renntech airbox and K&Ns. Under those controlled conditions and with their shop fan blowing air I got around 6 or 7 rwhp/tq consistently. I don't think any of that had anything to do with the airtubes but you never know. I will say that they don't seem to get as hot to the touch as the stock plastic ones though. Possibly in real world driving conditions the CLK tubes may provide more of a benefit/gain than in a shop on a dyno
