3M DI-NOC CF Vinyl

One of the guys from the c63 section bought some 3m CF vinyl and inspired me to do the same. It looks very very realistic in person, down to strands of fibers and how it reflects light. I might buy some clear coat tomorrow and try clear coating some vinyl to see if I can replicate like a wet cf look.

I bought some and was going to do the hard plastic trims in my interior but decided not to because it would clash horribly with my light wood interior, but those with aluminum trim I think it would look great!

Anyways heres some random things I practiced on.

I had it done on my car, but the button cluster with the seat warmers would not fit back in with it on. Not really sure what I am going to do at this point.

Its pretty stiff at first which is fine if you're doing flat surfaces but anything with curves or bends just throw a heat gun on it and it becomes super soft and pliable, but it does cool down fast. When I did the pager I overlayed a piece on top and used a heat gun for it to almost like melt into the small crevices and started to stretch it over the corners.

Now that is awesome! Why can't it hang with the heat? It becomes separated and bubbles? What if you clear over it or epoxy coat it or something?

Do you have the part number of just the star? Mine fell off from work by the dealer while it was still under warranty and the a-holes won't give me a new one as they say they have to replace the whole cover and won't do it now as it's out of original warranty and into the CPO? WTF!

So does this stuff leave a film? I'm wondering how hard it would be to put it on and take it off later??

Its very easy to remove it, doesnt leave a film on the part.

Yes, it becomes bubbles etc, and on sharp corners it removed itself.

I dont have a part number from the star, but i can look tomorrow, if i find one.

I removed the vinyl last year. When you dont stuck the 3m di noc vinyl on all parts (airboxes and the part who i did) it wouldnt look well.

Heres a Photo:

Not as bad as I thought it would be. I wonder if that was more from grease under the vinyl

Doesn't the star twist in place or something as I recall? check the back first. I've broken one before and it never glued back right. I had to dump the grill and buy a new one because it bothered me.

My star is held in place by one little metal disc looking thing, i can't explain what it looks like other than kind of a clutch..so you slip it over the plastic star and it bends the metal in place so it doesn't move...however its wedged so far in there that I have I can't take it off so I think I'm just going to have to snap it off and put it back on with some sealant or double sided tape.

...a panty dropper...
Phil W..... How long did it take you to do this to your front intake cover? Also it was all done with one piece of vinyl correct? I think I am going to order some and attempt this but also spray 3 coats of clear over the vinyl and see how it stands up to the heat. Any inputs?

Let me know how this goes. I want to do it as well. Do you think if we use a heat resistant glue in addtion to the 3m sticky back that the heat problem would be solved? However, maybe its the vinyl itself that cannot deal with the heat. Thoughts?

Yeah, I never really liked blacked out grills but yours looked pretty good especially since your car is lowered too. I might redo it later because you can see tiny parts of chrome up close but for now its ok.
