OK to drive with transmission 'unsealed'?
Since you have to destroy the little red plastic piece that 'seals' the plastic cap on the transmission filler/dipstick tube, is it acceptable to drive the car without that little red plastic piece? I know it is an inexpensive piece but does it serve any real purpose? If it keeps the cap from blowing off I can understand replacing it. If it is just there to discourage owners from servicing their own car I don't want to replace it.

okay. Some have an o ring used to press fit the cap.You can actually remove the cap without breaking the tamper tab but that is a little late
No worries about it blowing off without the tab.
Measure carefully with the special ds at operating temp.

the red tab is just used to show mercedes you opened the transmission dip stick. The black plug and rubber o-ring actually seal the transmission dip stick. Your fine without it. I just leave mine without the red tab since i do my own transmission changes.

That tab still has a hole in top which has access to the filler tube which goes right into the trans. I would spend 2 bucks and be happy that there is no dirt getting inside. At least put tape over it.

The hole in the black cap that accepts the red plastic 'seal' is on the outside of the filler tube. Leaving out the red plastic seal will not allow anything into the filler tube. Thank goodness because when I tried to pull out the red plastic seal the top of it snapped off flush with the top of the black plastic cap. I had to drive the remaining red plastic piece down with a tiny screwdriver until it fell out of the bottom of the black plastic cap and I could remove the cap from the filler tube.
