air injection pump ?'s

Alright, well to free up some space in the engine bay, i was considering removing the secondary air injection pump. Now, i've researched it a bit, and it seems perfectly fine to remove it. I think a company called TVT design(?) even made block off plates so the SRT6 guys could ditch it. TVT isn't around anymore so i can't link you to any information on them.

My question is, would it harm the cats by not having this? I know it only works for 30 sec or so on start up, but its just an issue i haven't heard anybody say anything about. Maybe somebody has some insight?

I also never hear anybody talk about just removing it. When people burn them up or they go out, they'll spend the $$$$$ to fix it. If it didn't matter, i would figure people would just not fix them.

BTW i have no emissions testing.

The main drawback I can see is always having a check engine light on. And you won't know when you REALLY have a VALID CEL.

Correct, if you can remove without CEL, then go for it. I'm wondering the same thing as I've gone through 2 of them so far (at about $700.00 ea) and the CEL just came on again last week w/ the same code

most of the time its the relay that goes bad not the pump. they always replace the pump. if you could figure out what size resistor to stick on the end of the harness, you shouldnt get a CEL. otherwise if you pull it, I dont think it will harm the CATS. just get a
small code reader and turn the light off

Correct the relays stick but in turn they burn out the pump so a simple relay most time will not fix the whole problem.

Where are you planing on running a resistor?? The engine management dosent even monitor the air pump but what it does monitor is the rear 02s or the downstream o2s... at start up it injects air to warm the cats up faster so the readings of the rear 02s must drop below 40mV or a cel will show..

what can be damaged?? for first the rear o2 sensors ( if running both cats still) will be damaged... also in some instances the rear cats get loaded up with fuel and can cause problems.. are there ways to get around all this yes not simple thought

Has anyone installed the anti-foulers to pull the o2 sensors further away from the pipes. this tricks the sensor into thinking there is less polluted air than there actually is.

I have dont it , several months ago and there is no problems , i do have the engine light on about once in a month , do a reset with a scanner and every thing is ok .. it has made room for a seperate water tank for the intercooler . I still have the valves on the heads , that will be the next prodject to make some blanking plates ..
