Oil leaking from where? Oil cooler?

I'm having oil leak out of my oil fill cap but I've already replaced the cap. I think i have a slow leak from around the oil cooler gaskets and possibly the oil filter housing itself. I tried cleaning it away to see where it's coming from but that's turning out to be harder than expected. I bought the oil cooler gaskets but are there others I should replace while I'm in there? The bottom of the power steering reservoir has oil on it as well and the back of the AC compressor has oil on it that's leaking from above. None of this is coming from the valve covers gaskets. Those have been replaced within the last couple years.

I've got the two smaller gaskets. Is the big one for the bottom of the oil filter housing?

jawohl, das ist richtig

clean around sides and @ the bottom of the öl filter housing then keep an eye on öil leaks.
start your car let it idle and look for leaks.
when you drive, from wind pressure öil will move to different locations.

your car is it a high mileage car?
over time gaskets going bad with leaks, you don't know which one is going bad, might as well replace all 3 of them to be on the safe side.

That's what I'm thinking. While I'm in there I'd rather do all of them. The car has 117k on it. I was just wondering if there could be another issue causing the oil to backup out of the fill cap. I read somewhere this could be caused by CCV blockage. Is this true?

I'm betting the oil cooler gaskets. I just did this myself..twice.
The easy way is to remove the oil filter housing and cooler as a unit, then swap the 2 smaller gaskets to the cooler.
The hard part is you need a really big special socket to pull the oil filter housing. I forget the size, but it's like 46mm.

The 1st time I did the oil cooler only. What a pain to work in the tight spaces!
It still leaked, so I bought the big socket and replaced the 2 smalls and the big filter ring gasket.
I also put a very thin film of RTV sealant on the gaskets (against the WIS and everyone here). This time it worked. Your mileage may vary.

Its leaking from here for sure. Very common. Do your oil cooler gaskets while at it too.

PJmak, what is it that you circled? That isn't where the cooler gaskets are or the filter housing gasket. I just resealed the breather covers this weekend. That should help a little.

is a timing case cover gasket.

Very easy to do and very cheap.

Its separate from the oil cooler seals.

Good to know. while I have the timing cover off, is there any other maintenance that needs to be done in there? Chain tensioners, etc? For the first few seconds on startup it sounds light a slight ticking noise from the front that always goes away. It lasts for about 15 seconds. I assume I'll need to take the power steering pump off to get to the timing gasket?

Thats usually the MOT valve.

You can find it here.

You dont have to take anything off to redo that little gasket btw. I did mine pretty easily. Its a little tight with the m113, m112 theres way more room
